Habitat for Humanity of Sangamon County

Number of Students: 30

The world is experiencing a global housing crisis. About 1.6 billion people live in substandard housing and 100 million are homeless, according to the United Nations. (1) These people are increasingly urban residents, and every week more than a million people are born in, or move to, cities in the developing world. (2) Today, a billion people -- 32 per cent of the global urban population -- live in urban slums. If no serious action is taken, the United Nations reports that the number of slum dwellers worldwide will increase over the next 30 years to nearly 2 billion. (3)

Habitat for Humanity has shown that building homes does more than put a roof over someone’s head. In clean, decent, stable housing:

Families can provide stability for their children.

A family’s sense of dignity and pride grow.

Health, physical safety, and security improve

Educational and job prospects increase

Students volunteering to work with habitat will assist in the development of one of their new homes here in the city of Springfield.

Central Illinois Foodbank

Number of Students: 30

The Central Illinois Foodbank was established in 1982 by a coalition of churches and nonprofit organizations concerned about hunger and poverty. Since that time, the Foodbank has played a unique role in fighting hunger and poverty, and serving as a regional distribution center for donated food.

The Central Illinois Foodbank’s mission is to obtain donated food and grocery items for distribution to charitable agencies. The Foodbank also organizes special projects to raise food for those in need and works with public and private organizations to develop creative solutions to end hunger.

The Foodbank distributes 4.5 million pounds of food each year to those in need in central Illinois.

Approximately 160 food pantries, soup kitchens, after-school programs and residential feeding programs in 21 counties in central Illinois receive food from the Central Illinois Foodbank.

Students volunteering to work at Central Illinois Foodbank will have the opportunity to divide and sort food, stock shelves, and assist in special projects there on site.

Working at this site will qualify for hours towards “Harvest for All” food drive through the Illinois Farm Bureau as well as the Million Hour Challenge through the National FFA Organization.

Camp Butler National Cemetery

Number of Students: 30

Camp Butler National Cemetery is a United States National Cemetery located a few miles northeast of Springfield and a few miles southwest of Riverton, a small town nearby to Springfield, in Sangamon County, Illinois. It was named for Illinois State Treasurer at the time of its establishment, William Butler. It occupies approximately 53 acres, and is the site of 19,824 interments as of the end of 2005. Camp Butler National Cemetery was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.

Originally the camp was designed to train and "muster-in" Illinois troops for the Civil War, it was quickly pressed into service to house the approximately 2,000 Confederate soldiers who had been taken prisoner at the surrender of Fort Donelson, in Kentucky on February 16, 1862. By the war's end, over 200,000 Union troops would pass through Camp Butler.

An area was set aside for the burial of Confederate prisoners of war who died at the camp. As many as 700 prisoners died in 1862 when smallpox and other diseases were rampant in the camp. The situation was aggravated by the poor living conditions the prisoners endured there, and they were interred in the cemetery in their own Confederate section. A total of 866 Confederate prisoner's graves can be found today in the National Cemetery. They are buried side by side with 776 graves of Union soldiers and enlistees, making a total of 1,642 Civil War graves.

Along with the soldiers who fought on both sides of the Civil War, veterans who lost their lives in the Spanish-American War, both World War I and World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War are also buried at Camp Butler. There are also German and Korean prisoners of war buried there, relocated from a cemetery near Indianapolis, Indiana.

Students volunteering at Camp Butler National Cemetery will have the opportunity to participate in general landscaping projects along with maintenance and assisting in land improvements.

Students volunteering need to have the following: Shirts with no writing, No ripped jeans, No Shorts, No IPods or noise making devices, work shoes/steel toed boots if they have them.
