Animal Research Poster Project

PROCEDURE:

Construct an animal research project. This project may be done individually, with a partner or a group of three. The final product should be done on a poster board or a tri-fold. Select a vertebrate: mammal, reptile, bird,

amphibian or fish (needs to come from the main list). Find a minimum of two pictures of your animal (one picture can be drawn). All work should be typed (Arial or Time New Roman - 12 font). All information should be written in your own words.

POSTER:

The bottom of the poster should be labeled with the name of the student/students and room number. The front of the poster should have the name of the animal – it should be clearly visible. On the poster all areas of study should be organized and labeled with the correct information that you have researched. Poster should be done neatly, creatively and should be well organized.

AREAS OF STUDY:

  1. Identify the Animal

a)Common name of animal (example- African elephant, mountain lion, manatee)

b)Scientific name (in Latin) of animal – this includes two Latin words, the species and genus name.

c)To which subgroup does your animal belong? For example is it a mammal, reptile, amphibian, bird, or fish?

d)Is the animal warm-blooded or cold blooded?

  1. Habitat

a)In which parts of the world does your animal live(be specific about continents andcountries)?

b)In which ecosystem does the animal live? (desert, ocean , jungle, etc. Be descriptive when telling about the ecosystem!)

c)What does their habitat look like?

d)Does the animal migrate if so where? (Be specific)

  1. Diet

a)What does your animal eat (be specific)? (Tell if your animal is a carnivore, herbivore, or omnivore.)

b)How does it get its food?

c)Who is involved in the animal’s food chain and food web?

d)Which trophic level would you find this animal?

e)Is it a predator, prey or both? Explain.

  1. Reproduction / Life Cycle

a)How often does your animal have offspring?

b)How many does it have at a time?

c)Are they born live or from eggs?

d)How long is the mother pregnant (gestation time) or how long do they take to hatch?

e)How long do they stay with their mother?

f)How old are they when they start to get their own food?

g) How long does it take them to become fully grown?

h)What is the life expectancy of the animal (how long does it lives)?

  1. Appearance / Body

a)Select four body parts

  • Appendages – legs, tails, arms, wings, and fins
  • Covering – skin, hair, fur, feathers, and scales
  • Eyes, ears, teeth, mouth,tongue, nails, claws, neck, beck, etc.

b)Explain how each body part is adapted to suit a specific function for the animal you have selected.

c)Discuss the function and it’s importance in the life and survival of the animal.

GRADING:

The poster will be graded based on:

  • Poster design and appearance (clear, neat, organized colorful)
  • Accuracy of content about animal – well researched in all areas of study
  • Quality of written work – work is typed and free of any spelling and grammar mistakes
  • Work is done in students own words
