Recruitment Process & Application Form Guidelines

Thank you for your interest in becoming a Continuing Professional Development(CPD) Tutor for one or more of the courses listed in the person specification. We would be very grateful if you could take a few minutes to read these guidelines to ensure you understand each stage of the recruitment process and that you complete your application form correctly.

Tutor Recruitment Process

There are twostages to the recruitment process:

  • Stage 1 is the submission of your completed application form and a filmed teaching assessment task.

If you are successful at Stage 1 you will be invited to Stage 2.

  • AtStage 2, you willattend a CPD workshop/course relevant to your application, Delegates on this workshop will be made aware there is a trainee tutor present, and the trainee will be asked to deliver a section of the course, supported by the tutor notes. You will then be asked to evaluate your delivery, and discuss this with the tutor on the final day of the course. The tutor will submit a written report on your evaluation, and will make a recommendation to the selection panel based on your performance.

If you are successful at Stage 2, you will be confirmed as a CPD tutor for one or more syllabi levels. Please note that you may be asked to tutor additional levels and/or workshops if the recruitment panel feel that your application demonstrates particular strengths relevant to those syllabi.

Tutor Recruitment Process : Stage 1 : Application Form & Filmed Teaching Assessment Task

The CPD Tutorapplication form has eight sections. Please read the notes below to assist you in completing each section of the form.

Section One: Which syllabi levels do you teach ?

We are recruiting tutors for a number of different courses. The key competencies for each role are outlined in the Person Specification. Please indicate all of the syllabi levels that you teach and indicate the level(s) in which you have the most secure knowledge.

Section Two: Your Personal Details

Please complete all your personal details clearly. As much of the contact for CPD tutoringis carriedout via email, it is mandatory that you have access to a current and functioning email account thatyou will be able to check regularly. You are required to inform the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) if any of your contact details change, in particular your email address.

Section Three: Education and Training/Membership of Professional Bodies

Please use this section of the form to list any relevant qualifications, membership or trainingyou have received.

Section Four: Languages

Please use this section of the form to indicate which languages you are able to use fluently.

CPD Tutorsmust be able to communicate both in the language of delivery in the country of the workshop / learner, and also in English to allow communication with staff in London.

Section Five: Employment History

Please use this section of the form to list your current and previous employment including the name of the employer, a brief description of your duties in each role, and the relevant dates.Please start your list with the current or most recent employment and work backwards through your career.

Section Six: Knowledge of RAD syllabi

Please use this section to indicate all of the RAD syllabi which you currently teach, and also any particular areas of expertise, syllabus or non-syllabus, which might support your application.

Section Seven: Personal Statement

This is an important section of the application form. We will only be able to determine your suitability to become a Tutor through the information that you give us. For this reason, it is beneficial for you to include as much relevant information as possible.

Please do not assume that any other involvement you may have with the RAD, past or present will be taken into account if you do not include the information on this application form.

Your personal statement should:

  • Clearly address each of the Key Competencies for each role you wish to be considered for. Please use examples where relevant, and keep answers clear and concise.
  • Demonstrate that you have sufficient knowledge to train teachers.
  • Include any other information that you think is relevant, which has not been covered by previous sections of the form.

Section Eight: References

This section should be completed by someone in a position to comment on both your academic ability and dance teaching potential as appropriate.

Section Nine: Applicant Declaration and Signature

Please indicate that you have read the applicant declaration by signing and dating the application form or indicating your signature by placing a tick in the appropriate box.

Tutor Recruitment Process:Stage 1 Filmed Teaching Assessment

You are also required to completea Filmed Teaching Assessment task for each role you wish to be considered for. (Please choose a different topic for each filmed assessment)

The Filmed Teaching Assessment task has been designed so that you are able to demonstrate your ability to teach in an environment in which you feel comfortable.

You are required to submit an eight (8)minutefilm of you teaching a group of students at a level of your choice from Grade 1 upwards. The film should be an eight minute section of a full lesson/class

We recommend that you have no less than three students in your class.

Grades 4 – 5 Filmed Teaching assessment topics

You need to choose one topic from the following three categories.

  1. Use of space.
  2. Response to music.
  3. Movement Dynamics

Advanced Filmed Teaching assessment topics

You need to choose one topic from the following three categories.

  1. Use of space.
  2. Response to music.
  3. Performance

Pointe Work Filmed Teaching assessment topics

You need to choose one topic from the following three categories.

  1. Use of space.
  2. Response to music.
  3. Control

Intermediate Foundation and Intermediate Filmed Teaching assessment topics

You need to choose one topic from the following three categories.

  1. Use of space.
  2. Response to music.
  3. Co-ordination

Dance to Your Own Tune Filmed Teaching assessment topics

You need to choose one topic from the following three categories.

  1. Spatial Awareness
  2. Response to music.
  3. Performance

Grades 1 - 3 Filmed Teaching assessment topics

You need to choose one topic from the following three categories.

  1. Use of space.
  2. Response to music.
  3. Weight Placement

Choreography Filmed Teaching assessment topics

You need to choose one topic from the following two categories.

  1. Adapting repertoire for students .
  2. Developing choreography in response to music.

Dance Practice with Adults Filmed Teaching assessment topics

This filmed teaching assessment should evidence work with adults. You need to choose one topic from the following two categories.

  1. Teaching students of different abilities within a group
  2. Use of space

You are also required to submit a written lesson planto support each filmed teaching assessment and a written evaluation of your performance. The lesson plan should detail a full lesson/class.

Your lesson should be delivered in English, with the use of a translator (if required).

The Filmed Teaching Assessment task will be evaluated using the following criteria:

  1. Your knowledge of your chosen topic
  2. Your ability to communicate your topic to students in an appropriate and creative manner.
  3. Your ability to communicate the learning aims and outcome of the lesson.
  4. Your ability to lead a group of students confidently.
  5. The use of clear confident verbal instruction.
  6. Your ability to interact with your pianist and/or use an iPod or CD player.
  7. Your ability to make a written evaluation of your performance.

The Filmed Teaching Assessment task should reflect a realistic teaching situation.Both successes and failures should be evaluated to demonstrate your ability to accommodate a range of abilities and the challenges that they present. The aim of thetaskis for you to demonstrate your teaching skills.

You should submit your film via a video hosting service, such as YouTube.

When uploading your video, please follow these guidelines:

a) When titling your video, please label it Filmed Teaching Assessment followed by your full name (as listed on your application).

b) In the description of your video, please detail your full name (as listed on your application) and any other relevant information you wish to share.

c) It is recommend that you set the privacy settings to unlisted (or the equivalent) so that the video is not publically available, but can be seen by anyone you choose to share the link/url with.

All parts of your submission must be received by the CPD Department in London by 27 June 2014 at 12 noon UK time.

The CPD Departmentwill contact all applicants approximately four weeksafter the closing dateto inform them whether they are to proceed to Stage 2 of the Recruitment process.

Tutor Recruitment Process: Stage 2

If your initial application is approved, you will be informed and provided with additional information on Stage 2 of the recruitment process. The CPD department will work with you to arrange a suitable time for you to attend an assessment workshop/course.

The CPD department will provide assistance with the cost of travel to and from the assessment workshop/course.

Appointment

On successful completion of the training you will be appointed as a freelance CPD tutor for the relevant CPD activities and you will be allocated workshops to tutor. You will be assigned tutoring on courses in your country of residence with the possibility of additional tutoring in other countries[1].
