Guidelines for answering all of the Study Questions, from Robert Asher’s Concepts in American History.

1)It is expected that you will answer the Study Questions, Parts I,II, and III from Asher’s Concepts in American History by using Asher’s book. Do your own work. Do not seek assistance from another student. Questions that are copied directly from those answered by another student will receive zero credit.

2)You must have complete answers to receive all of the possible points. If you choose to use separate sheets of paper, be sure to write (or type) the questions prior to writing your answers. After writing the question, leave a space between the question and the answer. Leave two spaces between the answer and the next question. If you decide to type out your answers, be sure to type them in Times New Roman, Font size 12.

3)Since this is a learning exercise, I don’t mind you copying the answer directly from the book;but you mustenclose all of your written answers in quotation marks. If you choose to write the answer in your own words, make sure that you include the thoughts Asher is trying to convey. If there are phrases and words in your answer that Asher uses, then you must enclose them in quotation marks.

Look carefully at this example question at the very top of p. 28 of Concepts in American History.

According to Robert Asher, what did the Supreme Court decide regarding “all criminal defendants”?

Complete answer: “In the 1960s, the Supreme Court ruled that all criminal defendants had not just a right to hire an attorney to represent them, but actually had to be represented by an attorney.” (Note that the period at the end of the sentence goes inside the quotation mark.)

Note: If Asher uses one or more quotation marks within a sentence, then you should enclose his quotation within single quotation marks, since it is considered to be a quotation that is contained within an overall quotation.

Example: look at the following quote on p. 31.

The development of democracy in the modern world would eventually change the size of the group allowed to participate in government (mainly by voting for government officials) from the “many” to most adults, and then to all adults.

Your answer would look like this:

“The development of democracy in the modern world would eventually change the size of the group allowed to participate in government (mainly by voting for government officials) from the ‘many’ to most adults, and then to all adults.”

Also, note that if typing, you would italicize the words that Asher has in italics. (For this answer, it is the words many, most and all). If you are handwriting your answers, you would underline the words that appear in italics.

4)Be certain that you include all the words in each answer (no abbreviations).

5)Make sure when answering that you spell correctly, since the words are in the Asher book.

6)Staple all of your answer pages together.

7)Be sure to write your name on the assignment before you submit it on the due date.
