  1. INTRODUCTION

Candidates applying for Professional Membership (MIMMM) may at the same time apply for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng), Chartered Scientist (CSci) and/or Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv). Eligibility will depend on an individual’s academic qualifications and work experience.

Applications for MIMMM as a standalone qualification are welcome from engineers, scientists, chemists, physicists, geologists and technologists including those from the packaging and wood, industrial, academic and related sectors.

Applicants are expected , to have practical experience and be able to apply the underpinning technical principles relating to their IOM3 discipline. They must also be able to exercise competent managerial skills and judgment.

Applicants for CEng MIMMM must be able to demonstrate their professional engineering experience and managerial skills. They must have practical knowledge and understanding of the engineering principles that underpin their IOM3 discipline. They must also be able to demonstrate the use of such knowledge to contribute to the design, manufacture, maintenance, testing and safety of components, devices and structures or the control of process plant.

Applicants for CSci MIMMM must be able to demonstrate their professional scientific experience and managerial skills. They must have scientific knowledge and understanding to enable them to initiate and manage scientific projects and processes relating to one or more groups of materials or natural resources. They must also be able to apply such knowledge within regulatory frameworks.

Applicants for CEnv MIMMM must be able to demonstrate the application of environmental and sustainable development principles relevant to their IOM3 discipline. They must also be able to demonstrate how they take a leadership role in sustainable management through a strategic environmental approach to the development of products, processes and the project life cycle. In addition they are expected to take a lead in communicating the environmental case both to their colleagues and the wider audience.

There are four stages to complete in order to gain Professional Membership with or without registration. These are:

  • Educational Base:an accredited Level 7 qualification such as Master’s first degree or an alternative package of qualifications, such as a Bachelor’s first degree topped up with an MSc or PhD; or an accredited company training scheme, which will need to be assessed. Those who wish to apply for CEng and do not satisfy these requirements can still apply via the Technical Report Route (TRR) and should consult the TRR guide. Those who do not hold these qualifications can still apply via the Equivalence Route and should contact the Membership Department for further information and guidance.
  • Initial Professional Development (IPD): demonstrating structured development in the early and formative years of employment, including gaining responsible experience. This may be through a formal IPD scheme or through general work experience.
  • Professional Review: submission and testing of evidence through a peer review process to ascertain whether the applicant has achieved both professional competence and a commitment to professional codes.
  • Continuing Professional Development: a commitment to maintaining competence to practise.

Applicants are assessed against the respective Competence and Commitment requirements for which they have made an application. Applicants for CEng MIMMM will be assessed against the Engineering Council’s UK-SPEC; those for CSci MIMMM against the Science Council’s standard; and those for CEnv MIMMM against the Practice Direction of the Society for the Environment. IOM3 has its own standard for the award of MIMMM, where applicants have made an application for this qualification as a standalone. Full details of these standards are given in the appendices.

2. FORMS

a) Completing the Application Form

The application requires the submission of a completed form plus supporting documentation. It is important to complete all sections of the form in the spaces provided, even when certain sections are amplified in the Professional Review Report. Forms must be completed in print or written in BLOCK CAPITALS. The application form is available on the IOM3 website at There are different forms for new and existing members of IOM3 and you must ensure that you complete the correct one.

Section A – personal Details

All details in section A must be completed, including the membership number (if the applicant is already a member).

Section B – technical education & academic qualifications

Details of all academic courses completed since leaving school should be included.

Section C – present employment

Details of the applicant’s current employer, indicating their line manager and any directly reporting staff, should be recorded. This should include details of any professional qualifications they hold such as FIMMM, MIMMM, AIMMM, TIMMM or those from other bodies.

Section D – references

Applicants must have two referees who should be Professional Members or Fellows of IOM3. In the case of those applying for CEng, CSci or CEnv registration, the referees must also hold these grades of registration. Referees should have known the applicant for a minimum of two (2) years and able to validate the applicant’s current knowledge and levels of responsible experience. One of the referees should act as the Sponsor.

Where an applicant does not know any members of IOM3, it is possible to accept Professional Members or Fellows of other engineering or scientific institutions holding the respective grade(s) of registration, as referees. Family members or subordinates within the applicant’s company cannot be accepted as referees.

Section E – declarations

The applicant and their sponsor must sign off the declaration statements at the end of the application form and the sponsor must sign off all supporting documentation.

b) Referee/ supporter Forms

The applicant’s details must be completed in the boxes provided at the top of each of the referee forms, both on the front and the flipside. The name of the referee should be added to the top of the letter on the front page.

Referees should provide as much detail as possible about the applicant and complete it by signing it off. The completed form should be returned directly to the IOM3 Membership Department, unless the referees prefer to give it to the applicant for submission.

c) ACADEMIC CERTIFICATES

Applicants must provide copies of their academic certificate(s) unless these have been submitted to IOM3 previously for the award of another grade of membership such as GradIMMM. We do not require copies of secondary school qualifications. Where a qualification has been gained outside of the UK, it may be necessary for the applicant to submit a transcript of the qualification. Further advice on this requirement is available from the Membership Department.

3. SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION

a) The Professional Review Report

The Professional Review Report (PRR) is an extended CV, which gives details of the applicant’s career history anddevelopment to date. It provides the applicant with the opportunity to demonstrate their broad technical and managerial training and experience.

For each position held, the applicant should provide a description of their function and responsibilities, quantifying these wherever possible; the materials or natural resources, techniques and processes they have become familiar with; and any training they have undertaken.

The PRR should link the applicant’s careerdevelopment to the Competence and Commitment requirements of the grade(s) they are applying for. These are listed in the appendices

There two presentation of PRR which are acceptable. The first uses the Competency Logbook Template, where the applicant can detail supporting evidence against each of the individual competencies for a specified period of time. It is recommended that evidence is recorded for no more than one calendar year per sheet. Copies of the Competency Logbook Template can be downloaded from the IOM3 website. Where an applicant is applying for more than one registration grade, individual Competency Logbook Templates need to be completed for the respective grades e.g. CEng and CEnv.

Alternatively the applicant can use an Expanded CV, with the appropriate competency mapped against the supporting evidence in the right hand margin as shown below in the example. This format is easier to use when applying for more than one registration grade.

Project Manager – Recycled Resources (9 June 2014 – present) / CEng / CEnv
General description of role: Technical leader for our company’s development programmes concerned with a range of recycled metallic and non-metallic materials. Projects vary in size from £150k to £3m over timescales of 6 months to 3 years. Role includes customer presentation and liaison, and the writing of tenders, including descriptions of technical risk. Bidding work also includes the construction and negotiation of non-disclosure (NDA) and intellectual property (IP) agreements, in association with the IP and Contracts Departments. In addition to driving technical strategy I am also responsible for project management, implementing our environmental assessment procedures, which I co-wrote, and the generation of safe working practices (such as COSHH). I also supervise and mentor 12 members of staff. Mentoring activities focus on both professional and career progression. All work is performed to conform to quality standards (accredited to ISO 9001:2015). I have increased both the depth and breadth of my technical knowledge substantially during this period, both through on the job training and by attending formal courses and IOM3 events. I have also spoken about our environmental practices at a recent SocEnv meeting.
Due to the varied nature of the work involved in this position, I have broken down my most recent project to better indicate how the Engineering Council and Society for the Environment requirements have been met. / A1-A2

Training undertaken: On-the-job learning to fully understand the challenges and principles behind the re-use of recycled copper from landfill mined copper cable for manufacturing purposes.
Responsibilities: Technical leader for a team of 10 people. Responsible for setting up collaborative work between the company and an Indian supplier to source copper metal for specific applications. Oversaw the initial selection of appropriate extraction method and materials testing procedures and standards. Regularly prepare presentations and review reports for Customer Consortium. Responsible for controlling budgets for individual work packages.
Technicalities of project include: An environmental impact assessment of several brown field sites marked for future built development was required; metal characterisation studies to ensure material integrity compliance for a range of defence-related processes and products; a study of Indian regulations around reclamation operations in an IS5572:2009 hazardous environment and their associated codes of practice. / C1, C3

It is not expected that applicants will have gained extensive experience in all areas, but it is essential that over the period of their career, they will have gained sufficient technical and managerial experience in an IOM3 technical area to satisfy the majority of the requirements. In areas where an applicant’s experience has been limited, they should at least be familiar with the issues.

The Professional Review Report should not only demonstrate career progression, but also establish the approximate length of time the applicant has been working at the level of responsibility appropriate to being an MIMMM and/or CEng and/or CEnv and/or CSci.

Those who have previously had their training assessed or have completed an accredited training scheme need only emphasise their responsible experience in their Professional Review Report, but must submit a letter from the company confirming that they have completed the necessary training required for the grade and registration for which they have applied.

The Professional Review Report should ideally be five (5) sides of A4 and each page must be numbered.

The applicant must sign-off their Professional Review Report under the statement:

I certify that this Professional Review Report is a true and accurate statement.

The Sponsor must authenticate the Professional Review Report under the statement:

I certify that I have read the Professional Review Report of (the applicant’s name) and confirm that, to the best of my knowledge, it is a true and accurate statement.

In addition to the PRR, applicants are also required to submit either a case study or the summary of a presentation they will make at their professional review interview. The choice of whether to apply through the Case Study Route or the Presentation Route is up to the applicant.

A case study or presentation and associated summary is not required for those applying for MIMMM as a standalone grade, but is required for those seeking registration as a CEng, CEnv or CSci, and for those seeking MIMMM for the purposes of Mineral Reserves and Resources Reporting.

The purpose of the case study or presentation is to give an example of the applicant’s work. It will be used by the Professional Review Panel as a basis for questioning at the Professional Review Interview. Applicants are therefore requested to select a project, or a maximum of two smaller projects, which will demonstrate the range of their knowledge, experience, technical ability and depth of responsibility.

b) The Case Study ROUTE

Applicants are required to select a project, which will demonstrate the range of their knowledge, experience, technical ability and depth of responsibility.

A suggested format for the Case Study is:

  • Title: this should indicate the topic and nature of the case study
  • Synopsis
  • Background: this could include details such as how potential projects are identified, how project proposals are prepared, how the applicant was allocated the task and the size of the project
  • Technical content: this could include details such as planning the project, methods and techniques used, technical and budgetary constraints, and the applicant’s role in the management of the project
  • Outcomes: this could include the financial and/or technical success and impact, and potential applications

It is essential that applicants clearly identify their role in the project by writing in the first person singular, and also clearly identify the technical aspects, issues, outcomes and impact. Those applying for CEng should demonstrate the engineering dimension of the work; for CEnv, the environmental dimension; and for CSci the scientific dimension.

The applicant must make clear their own contribution in the projectotherwise it might be assumed that the project was not fully their responsibility and they may not be given full credit for the work.

Applicants must ensure that they have obtained any necessary permission from their employer for the use of the Case Study. In the event of the Case Study being commercially sensitive, applicants should seek advice from the Membership Department.

The Applicant must sign off their Case Study under the statement:

The Sponsor must authenticate the Case Study under the statement:

I certify that I have read the Case Study of (the applicant’s name) and confirm that, to the best of my knowledge, it is a true and accurate statement.

c) The presentation route

Similar in scope to the Case Study, applicants are required to select a project, which will demonstrate the range of their knowledge, experience, technical ability and depth of responsibility on which they are able to make a formal presentation supported by PowerPoint slides and any relevant supporting artifacts.

Presentation Summary

This should be no more than 250 words on the project being presented at the Professional Review Interview, but with sufficient detail to brief the Assessors. It must be submitted with the application.

The Applicant must sign off their Presentation Summary under the statement:

The Sponsor must authenticate the Presentation Summary under the statement:

I certify that I have read the Summary of (the applicant’s name) and confirm that, to the best of my knowledge, it is a true and accurate statement.

Presentation

Applicants will be allowed 10 minutes during the Professional Review Interview to give their presentation, which will be followed by up to 10 minutes of questioning by the interviewers on the project presented.

Applicants are requested to use PowerPoint with the content covering the background, technical content and outcomes of the project in more detail than the summary previously submitted. Those applying for CEng should demonstrate the engineering dimension of the work; for CEnv, the environmental dimension; and for CSci the scientific dimension.

The applicant must make clear their own contribution in the projectotherwise they may not be given the appropriate credit for the work.

Applicants must ensure that they have obtained any necessary permission from their employer or client for the use of the project. In the event of the project being commercially sensitive, applicants should seek advice from the Membership Department.

d) RECORD OF CPD

Applicants must include an up to date record of all relevant CPD activities in their application submission. IOM3 policy on CPD can be found at:

It is a requirement of the Engineering Council, Science Council and Society for the Environment that registrants and those seeking registration participate inand record their CPD. IOM3 recommends that membersundertake 35 hours of CPD each year.
