25. Stikbold! A Dodgeball Adventure (PS4)

  • OUR REVIEW
  • PROFILE

Publisher: Game Swing / Developer: Game Swing

Release Date: 5th Apr 2016 (USA) / 5th Apr 2016 (UK/EU)

This crazy, chaotic dodgeball game seemed to come out of nowhere in 2016, offering up a fast-paced, grin-inducing spin on the sport. Up to four players can duke it out in teams or in free-for-all as they aim to smack each other out of a selection of unusual arenas. The controls are very simple but there's just enough nuance to keep things competitive, and the whimsical presentation will keep the laughs rolling.

24. Nidhogg 2 (PS4)

  • OUR REVIEW
  • PROFILE

Publisher: Messhof / Developer: Messhof

Release Date: 15th Aug 2017 (USA) / 15th Aug 2017 (UK/EU)

The first game laid down an incredibly solid foundation of frenetic fencing mixed with tug of war, but Nidhogg 2 adds a sprinkling of extras that make it even more entertaining. With a striking new art style, lots of new weapon types, and a much larger roster of levels to fight through, this sequel has plenty to keep you busy. Face off in one-on-one duels, or use the tournament mode to see who among your chums is truly worthy of being eaten by a giant sky serpent. Be sure to give this a try for some unique, compelling multiplayer.

23. Castle Crashers Remastered (PS4)

  • OUR REVIEW
  • PROFILE

Publisher: The Behemoth / Developer: The Behemoth

Release Date: 17th Sep 2019 (USA) / 17th Sep 2019 (UK/EU)

A PS3 multiplayer classic returns in Castle Crashers Remastered. This cartoonish beat 'em up may be showing its age a little, but it's more than capable of delivering some simple multiplayer action with a few friends. The main mode sees you (mostly) working together to defeat all the baddies, while there are competitive elements thrown into the package as well. Many games try to capture the raucous nature of Castle Crashers, but there's a simplicity to this game that makes it effortlessly compelling.

22. Laser League (PS4)

  • OUR REVIEW
  • PROFILE

Publisher: 505 Games / Developer: Roll7

Release Date: 10th May 2018 (USA) / 10th May 2018 (UK/EU)

Laser League might not be the most populated game online, but there's no denying it's a brilliant multiplayer title. Four-player local matches let you duke it out in two teams of two, and the game quickly gets everyone frantic with its rapid pace, neon aesthetic, and simple controls. This is a unique title that's deserving of your attention during multiplayer gaming sessions.

21. That's You (PS4)

  • OUR REVIEW
  • PROFILE

Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment / Developer: Wish Studios

Release Date: 4th Jul 2017 (USA) / 4th Jul 2017 (UK/EU)

Sony has been making a concerted effort to make gaming more accessible with its range of PlayLink titles, and our pick of the bunch is That's You. Using smartphones as controllers, a group of players is asked questions about each person, naturally leading to some hilarious outcomes. You'll also be snapping selfies, drawing on each other, and second-guessing your opponents as you strive for victory. A great multiplayer title for the non-gamers in your life.

20. Ultimate Chicken Horse (PS4)

  • OUR REVIEW
  • PROFILE

Publisher: Clever Endeavour / Developer: Clever Endeavour

Release Date: 12th Dec 2017 (USA) / 12th Dec 2017 (UK/EU)

How can you go wrong with a name like Ultimate Chicken Horse? This is a 2D platformer with an ingenious twist -- you build the level as you play it. Laying down traps and obstacles may slow your opponents down, but you'll have to navigate them too if you're to win. There's a great sense of strategy to this title that balances perfectly between careful planning and royally screwing everyone over.

19. Everybody's Golf (PS4)

  • OUR REVIEW
  • PROFILE

Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment / Developer: Clap Hanz

We all know about the new online capabilities of Everybody's Golf, but what about its local multiplayer offering? Well, up to four players can play together locally, competing in 9 or 18 hole matches, and it's decent, lighthearted fun. As its name suggests, this is a golf game that practically anyone can pick up and have fun with, and its cheery tone makes it an ideal game to play with family.

  • OUR REVIEW
  • PROFILE

Publisher: Team 17 / Developer: Team 17

Release Date: 23rd Aug 2016 (USA) / 23rd Aug 2016 (UK/EU)

We couldn't not include a Worms game on this list, and Worms W.M.D is the best available on PS4. With gameplay that harks back to the glory days of Worms: Armageddon, this is the classic turn-based invertebrate warfare you know and love with a new, cartoon-like lick of paint. It doesn't add much to the established formula, but there's a reason these games are still around - this is excellent fun with a couple of friends. Incoming!

The music game boom may have died faster than rap metal, but there’s no doubt that Rock Band 4 is still a great co-op experience. With the multi-instrument format lending itself brilliantly to extended party sessions, and an enormous catalogue spanning hundreds of bands and genres, this remains the best multiplayer musical experience you’ll find on the PS4 right now.

16. Guacamelee! 2 (PS4)

  • OUR REVIEW
  • PROFILE

Publisher: Drinkbox Studios / Developer: Drinkbox Studios

Release Date: 21st Aug 2018 (USA) / 21st Aug 2018 (UK/EU)

Drinkbox Studios' Mexican Metroidvania is brilliant when playing solo, but it's also lots of fun playing with others. Guacamelee! 2 supports up to four players on the same screen, and it can make for some wonderfully chaotic multiplayer. With friends helping you out in battles, or someone helping to solve a tricky platforming challenge, this game can fly by with pals -- or it can spiral out of control, which is arguably more fun.

15. The Swords of Ditto (PS4)

  • OUR REVIEW
  • PROFILE

Publisher: Devolver Digital / Developer: onebitbeyond

Release Date: 24th Apr 2018 (USA) / 24th Apr 2018 (UK/EU)

A friend can join your adventure in The Swords of Ditto at any time, and playing cooperatively can give way to so many cool moments. Whether it's solving a quirky little puzzle together or tackling a dangerous foe as a duo, it's easy to whittle away the hours when you're teamed up. What's more, the game's randomised elements, such as its map, give you and your best buddy a good reason to keep coming back.

  • OUR REVIEW
  • PROFILE

Publisher: Psyonix Studios / Developer: Psyonix Studios

We can't talk about multiplayer without mentioning Rocket League. Up to four players can play offline in split-screen, and the football-with-cars action is as immediate, tense, and brilliant as ever. After several huge updates, you're not just limited to football, either - variants on ice hockey and basketball, as well as the floor-smashing Dropshot, should keep you and your buddies glued to the PS4 all night.

We could've thrown any LEGO game on this list, but DC Super-Villains is probably our favourite on PS4. As always, you can play it with a buddy with its drop-in/out co-op. It's lighthearted, fun local multiplayer, and a great game for parents to play with their kids.

  • OUR REVIEW
  • PROFILE

Publisher: Double Fine Productions / Developer: Boneloaf

Release Date: 12th Dec 2017 (USA) / 12th Dec 2017 (UK/EU)

This bizarre brawler was a long time coming. Announced for PS4 years before its eventual release in 2017, Gang Beasts is mad, scrappy, and sort of genius. You and up to three others control primary coloured, gelatinous Beasts, and your aim is to eliminate the other players from a selection of unusual levels by any means necessary. The results can be uproariously funny, with wacky physics causing all sorts of slapstick mayhem. With its irreverent style, this one's a real crowd pleaser.

10. Rayman Legends (PS4)

  • OUR REVIEW
  • PROFILE

Publisher: Ubisoft / Developer: Ubisoft Montpellier

Release Date: 18th Feb 2014 (USA) / 21st Feb 2014 (UK/EU)

Rayman Legends might be a little long in the tooth now, but its local co-op is still grin-inducing fun. Running, jumping, and punching your way through each gorgeous level with a few friends is highly entertaining, not least because you can scrap with each other as you compete for collecting the most lums. Also included is Kung Foot, a surprisingly brilliant football mini-game that could last you almost as long as the main campaign. Colourful, silly, and effortlessly playable, this comes highly recommended.

This is a collection of clever party games you can play with your smartphone with up to seven others, depending on which game you pick. 8. Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes (PS4)

  • OUR REVIEW
  • PROFILE

Publisher: Steel Crate Games / Developer: Steel Crate Games

Release Date: 13th Oct 2016 (USA) / 13th Oct 2016 (UK/EU)

Isn’t it nice when a game comes along that takes the unique attributes of the medium and utilises them in a unique way? Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes is a deeply social game, and it’s at its best when played with the most antisocial hardware of all: PlayStation VR. While you no longer require Sony’s pricey headset for this cunningly communicative game, the different perspectives it enables mean it plays best in virtual reality. The premise, then? You’ve got a bomb to defuse, and only your allies can read the instructions. You need to relay information between you in order to make the right decisions, otherwise – as the title alludes – you’ll all go boom.

7. Divinity: Original Sin II - Definitive Edition (PS4)

  • OUR REVIEW
  • PROFILE

Publisher: Bandai Namco / Developer: Larian Studios

Release Date: 31st Aug 2018 (USA) / 31st Aug 2018 (UK/EU)

You can play through the entirety of Divinity: Original Sin II with a friend, and it's really quite an achievement. This is a very traditional, complex RPG, and adding a pal to the mix can make it even more engrossing than it already is. Indeed, player choice applies to both of you, and a robust character creation system gives you ample room to role-play and really embed yourself in the game's fantasy world. Playing through the whole thing with a pal is certainly a commitment, but it's difficult to deny the allure once you've tried it.

6. Borderlands: The Handsome Collection (PS4)

  • OUR REVIEW
  • PROFILE

Publisher: 2K Games / Developer: Gearbox Software

Release Date: 24th Mar 2015 (USA) / 27th Mar 2015 (UK/EU)

In an age of online multiplayer, the days of Goldeneye 007 split-screen may seem antiquated, but Borderlands: The Handsome Collection supports up to four local players brilliantly. The co-operative loot shooter compilation – which bundles two remasters with hundreds of hours of gameplay – is the perfect fodder for lazy afternoons on the sofa, as you grind out new gear and defeat all manner of bandits with buddies by your side. While you obviously can play online as well, Gearbox really invested serious effort into the local multiplayer options, making this a great choice for some couch co-op.

  • OUR REVIEW
  • PROFILE

Publisher: Activision / Developer: Beenox

Release Date: 21st Jun 2019 (USA) / 21st Jun 2019 (UK/EU)

Part of what makes CTR great is its lengthy Adventure mode, but no kart racer is complete without a suite of local multiplayer options. Nitro-Fueled has them in spades; single races, cups, and lots of battle modes are available for up to four player split-screen. With lots of tracks and options to tweak, PS4's best kart racer is a real blast with a few friends.

  • OUR REVIEW
  • PROFILE

Publisher: Matt Makes Games / Developer: Matt Makes Games

Release Date: 11th Mar 2014 (USA) / 19th Mar 2014 (UK/EU)

For our money, this is one of the best multiplayer titles on PS4. TowerFall Ascension's bow and arrow combat might be simplistic, but it's endlessly entertaining and has enough depth that you'll be discovering new little tricks hours into your playtime. You can play cooperatively as well as competitively, too, which offers up a whole other challenge should you ever grow tired of the latter. With such simple controls, almost anyone can pick this up and have a blast.
