John Paul Stevens Public Interest Fellowship

The University of California, Davis School of Law, is honored to award two John Paul Stevens Public Interest Fellowships, each amounting to $5,000, to two King Hall law students for summer 2015.

The awards will be made in partnership with the John Paul Stevens Public Interest Fellowship Foundation, established by former law clerks of Justice Stevens. The Stevens Fellowships recognize those students who demonstrate commitment to public service and potential for excellence throughout their legal careers.

The Fellowships

The John Paul Stevens Public Interest Fellowships are law student-initiated. Applicants must identify the governmental or non-governmental organizations with which they will collaborate and the public interest legal work they will perform.

The fellowship includes a stipend of $5,000 to support summer public interest law work, and requires a formal report due at the end of the summer.

The Application Procedure

A complete application must include:

1)  A completed application cover sheet (see page 3).

2)  A curriculum vitae/resume, indicating all experience (academic studies, fieldwork, volunteer work, and paid work) relevant to the fellowship.

3)  Statement of Purpose (2–5 pages, doubled-spaced, 12-point font), describing your interest in the award. This section of the application should discuss the following questions:

§  What public interest issue(s) will be addressed?

§  Why is this a critical issue?

§  Why are you interested in addressing this issue? Do you have a particular interest/expertise/experience?

§  What are the objectives/goals/expected outcomes of your proposed work?

§  How will the fellowship build on your current academic interests?

§  What role will the fellowship play in your long-term career plans?

§  How will your work contribute to the sponsoring organization’s ongoing mission/goals?

4)  The names of two faculty members who are willing to serve as references. They must be in a position to affirm the value of the fellowship in the context of your academic work and interests.

5)  A letter of support from the sponsoring governmental or non-governmental organization detailing the mission/goals of the organization and how your proposed work will contribute to its ongoing mission.

Deadline for Application and All Supporting Documents: March 1, 2015 at 4:00 PM.

All items must be submitted electronically. If you absolutely cannot submit the application over e-mail, you may submit five (5) complete copies of your application or your application will be considered incomplete. The application must be submitted by the deadline to the Fellowship Coordinator, Uyen P. Le at . Incomplete applications will NOT be considered. Applicants will be notified by mid-March.
