Parents & Students – Welcome to the April Guidance Newsletter. We will be providing updates from the guidance department on a regular basis through our emails and entries on the Guidance, College & Career Edsby Group Page and on the Steinbrenner website under “Resources” “Guidance”.
Summer Volunteers – Steinbrenner High School is in need of students to volunteer in the office during the summer. Interested students should sign up with Mrs. Pressley in Guidance.
Carrollwood Cultural Center Volunteers Wanted – Students who have completed 9th grade will be allowed to volunteer this summer. Orientation is Wednesday, May 24th, at 6:30 p.m. at 4537 Lowell Rd., Tampa. Orientation is mandatory. Phlone # 813-269-1310.
HBCU College Fair and Decision Day – April 1 – 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. –See flyer on the Guidance Edsby page for additional details.
Ryan Nece Foundation – Power of Giving - Student Service Program – 10th grade students only! – Deadline April 14 – See attachment for student profile. Students apply at http://ryannecefoundation.com/apply-here/
Florida Gulf Coast University Field Trip – April 6 - Mrs. Tschopp and Mrs. Blevins will be taking a group of juniors and seniors to Florida Gulf Coast University on April 6. Any junior or senior who is interested in going on this field trip should come to guidance to sign up and get paperwork. The charter bus will depart Steinbrenner High School at 7:30 am and return around 4:30 pm. Students will receive school business for the day. This is a good opportunity for students to see FGCU and get an official tour. Students should have a minimum of a 3.4 weighted GPA. All paperwork must be handed in no later than Friday, March 31.
Caution – Please be aware of tutoring centers or other organizations that tell students they will be given high school credit for course work at their institution. Always verify what counts for high school credit with your child’s counselor.
Financial Aid – The Free Application for Federal Student Aid opened October 1. The official website to apply for scholarships, grants, work study programs, etc. must be completed at www.FAFSA.gov Financial Aid is free and you do not have to pay a fee.
Bright Futures & Other Florida Financial Aid – Seniors received a copy of their Bright Futures status recently and should continue to apply for Bright Futures and other Florida financial assistance at www.FloridaStudentFinancialAid.org The final deadline to apply is May 23, 2017. 1st semester evaluations have been completed and results should be available online this week. Students may continue to improve their GPA and increase test scores through June 30. Community service hours must be turned in by graduation.
Scholarships – There are scholarships for all grade level students. Apply to as many scholarships as possible. The more “local” a scholarship, the better your odds are of winning. Examples of local scholarships on this month’s bulletin include Lutz Land O Lakes Womans Club, GFWC Tampa Tiger Scholarship, Orange Blossom Garden Club of Lutz, Tampa Gator Club, JF Swartsel Lodge and the DeBartolo Family Foundation Scholarship. Seniors – There are the most scholarships on this bulletin. Check out the 3-page list of scholarships. A scholarship bulletin is posted on the Steinbrenner Guidance website, the EDSBY Guidance page and in Guidance or the Success Center. See Mrs. Pressley with any questions about scholarships.
9th – 11th grade students – Earn scholarship money beginning in 9th grade for over 180 different colleges. Check out the Raise.Me website for scholarships NOW! https://www.raise.me
Virtual College Week – April 4-6 – Learn how to prepare for college without ever leaving home. www.VirtualCollegeWeek.org
Summer for Success – St. Pete College, Tarpon Springs Campus – 6 week program for Seniors to get a head start on the fall classes. Free tuition, books, and application fee. See Mrs. Pressley by the morning of March 29 if interested.
Hillsborough Community College – April 7 – Application Day! Representatives from HCC will be at Steinbrenner to help seniors through the complete application process. It’s important to apply as soon as possible to obtain the best possible class schedule for the summer or fall.


AP Testing – Begins May 1 and continues through Friday, May 12. Students should get a good night’s rest and bring necessary items to take the test. Students should bring black or dark blue pens and #2 pencils. Students should not bring cell phones. Report to the gym at 7:15 for the morning tests and 11:15 for the afternoon tests. Bring your own snack for the break, if you have two exams on the same day, bring your lunch, you may not have time to get lunch from the cafeteria. Make sure you have transportation home if you have an afternoon test, you will most likely not be able to ride the bus.
