Guidance for Working with Learners who are Pregnant

Guidance Note

The following is intended as guidance for members of staff to ensure the appropriate action is taken when dealing with learners who are pregnant.

If a learner notifies you that they are pregnant you must:

  • Suggest the learner accesses medical advice and support. If you are concerned that the learner has not done this refer to the Learner Support and Liaison Officer following the Safeguarding Procedure.
  • Ensure the appropriate members of staff are aware that the learner is pregnant including:

Course tutor and course team

Learner Support and Liaison Officer (LSLO) who will inform the appropriate Student Adviser and Retention Officer.

  • Course tutors should complete a Health and Safety Risk assessment for expectant mothers at college (this is available via the Intranet/Safeguarding) send a copy to the LSLO.
  • Course tutors should inform the placement provider, if appropriate, and ensure a risk assessment is shared or completed that is appropriate to placement.
  • Course tutors should agree an action plan with the learner for completion of course work and placement hours to fit in with their expected period of absence.
  • Ensure the learner has accessed advice and guidance if appropriate for

Child care

Financial support

Housing

This can be done by referral to the Safeguarding Team (LSLO, Retention and Counselling Teams).

  • If a learner has attendance issues either during pregnancy or following the birth of a child they should be referred to the Retention Officer following the normal procedure.
  • A NorthLindseyCollege information leaflet has been produced for learners who are pregnant and should be given to them at the earliest opportunity.

Please note:

  • It is realistic to expect a learner to be absent for at least 2 weeks after giving birth but this could be for up to 6 weeks or longer. Discussions should take place to determine the appropriate length of leave. A learner should also be expected to take leave at least a week before their predicted date of birth.
  • Some of our male learners may be expectant fathers and consideration should be given to their needs (e.g. time off to attend the birth etc.) and they should be actively encouraged to act responsibly.
  • A woman who is pregnant has responsibility for the unborn child. If it appears that a learner is not giving due consideration to the unborn child then this is a Safeguarding issue and should be reported in accordance with our Safeguarding policy.
