College Application Procedures

Student Responsibilities:

Students are responsible for sending their own applications to colleges.

The Counseling Department will be sending all student records electronically. Students should determine the number of specific Teacher Recommendations required by each institution and request teachers to complete a letter of recommendation.

Complete the Consent for Release of Student Records for each school to which you are applying. Bring the forms tothe school Guidance Office and give them to your counselor. You must include a check made out to Nashua High South for $3.00 for each transcript that you would like sent. The $3.00 fee covers the cost of sending the initial transcript, mid-year report, and final grades. All requests for transcripts must be submitted to the Counseling Department at least 4 weeks before the application deadline.

Since February 2011, over $178,000 has been awarded in college cash incentives to college bound New Hampshire teens. Students have also received iPads and thousands of dollars in college gear! More importantly thousands of New Hampshire residents have visited the site and received inspiration, information and planning support to pursue higher education goals. NH Higher Education Assistance Foundation (NHHEAF) is getting ready for another year of encouraging New Hampshire students to make a plan for higher education! So, take the pledge, read some articles, do the promotion of the month and get credits to be entered to win! (The more credits, the better chance you have to win our monthly drawings!)

The Common Application

The Common Application is a tool that can simplify the application process to 400+ member colleges across theUnited States. Students applying to colleges and universities which use the Common Application are able to complete one application and submit a copy to each member school they are applying to. The Common Application is given equal consideration to applications produced by the member college. Some Common Application memberschools require a short supplement in addition to the universal form. NCAA Initial Eligibility

Students who are planning to enroll in college and participate in Division I or II intercollegiate athletics musthave their eligibility status determined by the NCAA Clearinghouse. The NCAA Clearinghouse registrationform is available online at and should be completed by the fall of the senioryear. Students will need to print a copy of the Student Release Form and give it to the high school registrar.Once the NCAA has received the official six semester transcript, ACT or SAT scores, and required fee, a preliminary certification report will be available online. After graduation, if eligibility status is requested by a member institution, the Clearinghouse will review the final transcript and proof of graduation to make a final certification decision. Specific information regarding eligibility requirements is available at the NCAA web site.

FINANCIAL AID NIGHT -

Wednesday, December 7th6:00 – 7:30pm South Auditorium

Seniors and their parents are encouraged to attend the financial aid informational meeting on Wednesday, December 7th from 6:00PM-7:30PM in the South Auditorium. A representative from the New Hampshire Higher Education Foundation (NHHEAF) will be presenting important information on the financial aid process. Topics include filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid form (commonly referred as the FAFSA) funding, options, scholarship searches and the importance of deadlines. This is a very important presentation and we hope all of our seniors and their parents can attend.

Spanish speaking families are welcome to attend a presentation in the Career Center at the same time. We will have the Financial Aid Director from Nashua Community College giving the presentation in Spanish.

PSAT EXAM:

Thank you to all the students who participated in our first in-school administration of the College Board’s PSAT/NMSQT. The day ran smoothly and we are looking forward to receiving individual student results back some time in December. If you would like more information about how you can use PSAT/NMSQT scores for future planning, please visit Once students receive their score reports, they will be able to access the My College Quickstart Program to begin learning about different post-secondary options.

College Representatives Visiting South & College Fair Night

During the fall, many colleges come to South to visit with students in a small group setting. This is a great way for seniors and juniors to learn about the programs offered by various schools. Students may miss class to attend a college visit with their teacher’s permission, they may not miss a test or quiz. Students are required to sign up and get a pass in the Lower A Guidance Office. A listing of college visits is available on the guidance website.

We will also be hosting a college fair on the evening of November 7th. Over 200 colleges from across the country will be in attendance.

After School Academic Assistance

Teachers of available subject areas will be available after school on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s from 2:15-3:45 in the Media Center to provide small group tutoring to all interested students. Any parent or student interested in enrolling may contact Mrs. Jacalyn Lesser at 589.1542. When calling, please indicate student’s name, subject area(s), level of assistance/need and contact information on voicemail. Students are welcome to show up for tutoring without registering also.

SAT Prep

South will be offering free SAT test prep for the Critical Reading and Writing sections of the SAT exam. These sessions will prepare students for the November, December and January exams. For more information please visit your guidance office for a brochure.

In order for your application to be considered and reviewed you must have your SAT Reasoning Test and SAT Subject Test scores sent directly from the College Board in Princeton, NJ.
