Questions to Ask Colleges

One of the best ways to gather information about colleges is to ask questions of people who are knowledgeable. These include college representatives, college students, friends, relatives, neighbors, teachers, alumni and your school counselor.

ACADEMIC PROGRAM: What degrees are offered? What core courses are required for graduation? Any special programs such as: study abroad/ Independent study

ACCREDITATION: Is the college/university accredited? By whom?

ACTIVITIES: Newspaper, Yearbook, Dance, Drama, Debate, Band, Radio, Fraternities or Sororities

ADMISSIONS: What are the admission requirements for freshman? Which admission test is preferred ACT/SAT? What is the average ACT composite or SAT Score? How many students apply? How many are accepted? Is there an admission deadline?

ALUMNI: What percentage of graduates graduate and enter graduate school?

ATHLETICS: What intercollegiate athletics are offered? What intramural activities? Are athletic scholarships available?

CAMPUS: What is the campus setting? Urban/suburban/rural? What safety precautions are taken to protect students on campus?

COST: What is the total cost per year, tuition, room/board, fees? Are there payment plans available?

ENROLLMENT: Undergraduate? Graduate? What is the ratio of men to women?

FACULTY: What is the size of the faculty? What percentagehold aPh.D? What is the student/faculty ratio? Do graduate students teach? What is the average class size? Do students have assigned faculty advisor?

FINANCIAL AID: How many students receive financial aid?

HOUSING: Is housing available to all students? Dormitories (men, women, co-ed)? Separate dorms for honor students? Can students live off campus?

RELIGION: Is the college religiously affiliated? What facilities are available for religious services?

SCHOLARSHIP: What academic scholarship are available?

SPECIAL STUDENTS: Does the college have special programs and facilities for handicapped students? Is there a program for students with Learning Disabilities?
