Task3 Describing things & people

Theme: Fashion Stylist

Overall Goal

By the end of the class, the students should be able to describe a person’s physical appearance and fashion.

Project RUNGWAY is a parody of a famous American competition reality show <Project Runway>. The whole class will turn into the show site where the competition to choose the best fashion stylist throughout 4 different projects. Jungeun and Jooyeon will take the role of the show host. The siblings will take different roles depending on the projects, and the students play the role of the applicants.

Activity 1–Warm up : Applicant Interview

Function: asking and answering

Objective: Students share their opinion by answering to the questions regarding fashion.

Time: 10min.

Materials: PPT (appendix 1), 4 sets of cards

Procedure

  1. Make groups of 4.
  2. Each group will be given a set of cards
  3. As a group, the applicants (students) will pick up a card from the deck and give it to the interviewer (big sibling).
  4. The interviewer then asks you a question on the card.
  5. The next student does the same, taking turns.

Big Siblings: Read the question in the card the student picks up. Lead and help the discussion.

Activity 2 – Project1 Fashion Quotient

Function: describing physical appearance and clothing

Objective: Students are able to describe pictures of a person using words & phrases.

Time: 15min.

Materials: PPT (appendix 1),Group Point Chart[u1]

Procedure

  1. Show the students a picture of a person.
  2. The students are asked to describe three different parts of the person.

The three parts to be described are indicated in the picture already.

  1. Do the first picture together as a model activity, then each group takes turns to come up with the proper words or phrases to describe the three parts of a picture.
  2. Each team will be given 30 seconds to describe 1 picture.
  3. If the team makes it, it gets 1 point.

Big siblings: Do NOT tell them the answer, but give a faint hint.

Activity 3- Project2 Back to Back

Function:describing physical appearance and clothing

Objectives:

Students should be able to describe people’s appearance from their memorization.

Time: 20min.

Procedure

  1. Exchange 2 students among 2 groups. (1& 2, #&4)
  2. Make a pair within a group, but with someone from the different group.
  3. Everyone stands up and move closer to each other.
  4. Stare at each other for 30 seconds
  5. Turn around, facing each other’s back
  6. Students are not allowed to turn their head to see their partners.
  7. Students think of 5 features of their partners.
  8. One by one, the students make a sentence describing their partner’s appearanceand clothing.
  9. After one student stating one sentence, the other calls out “correct or wrong.”
  10. The winner is the one with more correct descriptions.
  11. After the game, go back to their original group.
  12. The judge (teacher) will count the number of the winners to give points. (1 winner=1point)

Big siblings: Help the students with vocabulary when they ask.

Activity 4– project 3 Fashion Hunting

Function:describing physical appearance and clothing

Objectives:

Students should be able to describe a person’s physical appearance and fashion using adjectives and short phrases.

Students should be able to match the descriptions with the object (picture).

Time: 20min.

Materials: ppt (appendix1), pictures of a variety of people (appendix3), sticky tape

Procedure

  1. Before the activity, post on the walls (in the other room) pictures of people.
  2. Give a description of one of the pictures in the PPT slide and have students guess which person the teacher is describing.
  3. Within a group, make pairs. Each pair will play different roles.

4. for A & B:

1) You will be given a card which has a name of a famous designer.

2) Go to the next room.

3) You have to find out the one in the designated designer’s outfit.

4) Come back, and describe it to the other two members.

5. For C & D:

1) Listen carefully to the description.

2) Go to the next room and bring the model [T2]who matches the description.

  1. Change the role (A,B <-> C,D) at the 2nd Round.
  2. The winner will be the team who brought the correct models in a shorter time.

Big Siblings: Go to the other room and wait for the students. Help students with expressions.

Activity 5[T3]– project 4 Showcase

Function: describing physical appearance and clothing

Objectives:

Students should be able to describe a person using simple sentences.

Time: 25min.

Material: magazine per group, A2 size paper, scissors, glue, pictures of celebrities

Procedure:

  1. The final project is to prepare for a showcase.
  2. Each team picks a picture upside down, which is the team’s model.
  3. Then each team will be given a fashion magazine.
  4. They have to coordinate the person by taking some items out from the magazine, and glue them on the paper.
  5. After completing the collage, or coordinating the person in the picture, the group members altogether come up to the front and show and describe their work to the audience.
  6. After the presentations are over, all the teams cast a vote to the best style except their own.
  7. The winner is the one with the most votes.

Big Siblings: Participate in the activity with the students and help them with expressions.

All the projects are competition-based. The instructor will keep record of the scores of each team. The final winner of the competition will be the one with most points. The winners will be given medals for the prize.

[T4] For the fair evaluation, it might be better for us to give the same picture for every student.Simply, you may choose ONE or TWO among the pictures you used for the lesson.
