I am Mr. Cassady and I have been a teacher in the San Bernardino District for 10 years. I have a Bachelor's Degree in English Literature and am currently working on a Masters in Education Technology. I teach English Language Arts and love teaching this age group and helping them realize that their opinions, ideas, and voices matter. I look forward to meeting your students and working with you for an amazing school year.

Greetings fellow Huunam, students and parents of Paakuma’ K-8 School. I’m Mrs Elliott (Houston-Elliott), and I have been a teacher with SBCUSD for 16 years. I will be teaching 7th Grade ELA and ELD for grades 4-8. I’m a mother of six, and I also have six grandchildren. I enjoy learning new ideas, concepts, etc. which lends itself nicely with teaching young minds. I truly believe that children are our future, therefore, we must teach them well, because one day they will lead the way. Let’s have a fun and productive school year!

I am Ms. Cajiuat. I have taught all grade levels from Kindergarten to college and I’ve also taught overseas. I have over 25 years of teaching experience and have been with SBCUSD for the last 12 years. I will be teaching Science, Social Studies and PE. I love to travel and participate in marathons and ultra marathons. I’m looking forward to working with your child and I’m excited to have a front row seat in their success at Paakuma’.

I am Mr. Mountjoy. I have taught for three years in SBCUSD and I have a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from the University of Redlands. I previously taught at San Bernardino High School and Del Vallejo Middle School. I was a pitcher for the Yucaipa High School baseball team and love to camp and ride my bike. I love preparing all 7th graders to be successful in high school and college.

My name is Mrs. Sorrell and I will be teaching Science and Social Studies. Working with children is truly my purpose in life and it will be a pleasure to work closely with you to educate your child. I received my Bachelor’s of Arts degree and teaching credential from California State University of Los Angeles. I have taught in the public school system for 16 years and believe in motivating students to reach their highest potential. I am married and the mother of two children. As a parent I understand the value of providing a quality education to all students.

We would like to emphasize the following policies:

School Supplies: Recommended supplies for each student are 3-inch 3-ring binder, supply pouch, 2 pencils, 3 pens (black, blue, and red), 2 highlighters of different colors, colored pencils and markers, scissors, a Paakuma’ Planner (provided), and college ruled filler paper.

Behavior and Discipline:Paakuma' K-8 is a Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS) School. We emphasize, support, and celebrate positive behavior; students are provided many avenues for making choices that will help their learning and personal maturity.

Restroom: Students are encouraged to use the restroom before school, during lunch, and during passing periods. Restroom passes will be given to students on a case by case basis as needed.

Cell Phones: Cell phones may be seen and used en route to and from school, but must be put away on campus. All cell phones used on campus during school hours without teacher permission will be confiscated and turned in to campus administrators. Students have the option of turning in their cell phones/devices as they enter the classroom, and retrieving them when they leave.

How do I know if my student has homework?

Homework will be given daily. All Paakuma' upper grade students are expected to read at least 30 minutes each night in addition to what has been assigned. Each student has been provided with a planner that they are required to use in every class, every day. Students should be recording objectives, homework, or classwork depending on their teacher’s requirements. Any questions about homework can be clarified by contacting the teacher, preferably email.

How do I know what grade my student is getting?

In addition to the Aeries Parent Portal, grades are periodically posted in class. They are sent home monthly through Math class to be returned, signed by a parent, for extra credit. At any time you are welcome to email us for information about your student’s grade(s).

Can my student complete make-up work?

If a student is absent, it is their responsibility to get all of their make-up assignments from their teachers upon their return. For help with a specific assignment, students should arrange a time to speak with their teachers before school, after school or during lunch. Please allow up to 48 hours for teachers to prepare work.

Can my student complete any extra-credit to increase their grade?

Student grades are determined by their performance on carefully crafted tasks that are designed to show proficiency. Students need to complete their assigned work before they are given extra-credit opportunities. Extra-credit will be offered at teacher’s discretion and usually only as an extension of assigned classwork.

How can I get in touch with my student’s teachers?

The easiest way to get in touch with us is by email, but you may also call or schedule meetings through the front office. If we are unable to take your call because we are teaching, we will return your call as soon as possible.
