Marn’s Memo

October 7, 2016

Dear Parents,

It has been a very exciting week in room 13! The children and I have been busy creating apple pie recipes, reading apple books, writing apple poems, and creating an apple tree through the seasons. It amazes me how much we learn each day!

In religion, we spent the week working on a variety of wonderful activities!! On Monday, we created an adorable Christian pumpkin that tells the story of Jesus. This art project is on display in our classroom and will be the theme for our first grade Halloween Prayer Service on Thursday, October 26th. Next, we completed Chapter 2 in our textbook titled “God Loves Us.” Throughout this chapter, we discussed how Jesus, our family and our Church help us to know God. Our faith words for the week were faith and believe. Your child’s assessment was sent home today in their Home Folder. Our St. Francis celebration on Wednesday was beautiful! The children were excited to use holy water to bless their stuffed animal at our classroom prayer service.

In math we continue tofocus on addition with sums up to 10.

Please help your child to review these facts at home so they become familiar with them on a regular basis. Using IXL on the on the computer will greatly help your child to learn these simple facts. We will continue with addition through next week.

In science we began our apple unit by studying the apple tree cycle. We read several books to help us learn what happens to the tree during each season. Please stop by and see the adorable apple trees hanging in the hallway!

In social studies we spent the week completing our study of Rules and Laws. Thank you for reviewing the magazine at home with your child. I was very pleased with their scores!!! At the end of the week we began our study of Christopher Columbus. We will continue learning more about this amazing explorer next week.

In handwriting we began the week by practicing lower case e and writing a recipe for an apple pie. After writing a neat final copy of our recipe, we added them to our “apple pie” project. Please review the papers and comments that come home on the handwriting pages. Take some time to look them over together with your child. Make sure to encourage proper writing whenever your child is completing homework, especially their names.

October 30this our Halloween celebration. The festivities will begin at 1:45 p.m. in our classroom. The parade will begin at 2:45 p.m. Remember this is a non-uniform day. Please send your child to school in street clothes and send their costume in a bag. Also, remember no violent weapons or masks are allowed. If you are unable to be at the party, please feel free to attend the parade with your camera.

The Book –It calendars are due on Tuesday,Nov. 1st. I will send home a coupon for a free pizza to all those who have them turned in on this day. Don’t forget to complete the activity on the back of the calendar.

Just a word about conferences…if you haven’t signed up to meet with me on the Sign up Genius that was sent out on Monday, please be sure to sign your name next to an available time slot. Thank you!! The sign up for conferences can be found on the Holy Family website.
