Green Waste Scheme

The green waste scheme gives residents the chance to recycle/compost their green waste rather than sending it to landfill.

The scheme operates throughout the main growing seasons for a 9 month period, normally between March and November. Green bins are collected on a fortnightly basis throughout this period.

How can I take part in the scheme?

By telephoning our Contact Centre on 01246 242424 and ordering a green bin. Please note, additional green bins will only be permitted where it is evident that there is a demonstrable need.

What can I put in my green bin?

You can put items such as garden vegetative waste including grass cuttings, hedge and plant clippings, small twigs and branches, prunings, weeds and cut flowers and cooked or raw food waste.

What shouldn’t I put in my green bin?

Items such as soil, rocks or stones, animal waste, treated wood or cardboard. Unfortunately if you put unacceptable materials in your green bin, we will be unable to collect it.

When and where should I present my green bin?

Your green bin should be presented at the edge of your property where it meets the pavement by 6am on the day of collection.

Can I use my black bin for excess garden waste?

No, garden waste should not be presented in your black bin. If you have excess garden waste you can take it to any Household Waste Recycling Centre. Information on Household Waste Recycling Centres can be found within this booklet.

Can I get assistance with presenting my green bin?

If you currently receive assistance with presenting and returning your black bin on collection day, then this will also happen with your green bin. If you are having difficulty in presenting your bin for collection and wish to be considered for this service, then please complete our on-line form on the home page of our website www.bolsover.gov.uk or telephone our Contact Centres on 01246 242424.

What if my green bin is not collected?

If your green bin is not collected on the day of your collection please report this via our website www.bolsover.gov.uk or telephone 01246 242424. We will check the drivers log to establish if there is any reason for the non collection.

If no reason can be found, then the collection of your waste will be offered as soon as possible before your next scheduled collection.

Please note if you have not presented your bin on time we will not return to empty it.

There are a number of reasons why bins may occasionally be left uncollected. These include the bin being too heavy, lids not fully shut or where unacceptable refuse is found.

If this occurs you will be left a notification through your letter box. The notification will explain why your waste has been left and what steps you should take to rectify this.

Sometimes collections cannot be made due to factors outside of our control, for example, adverse weather conditions such as snow and ice.

What if my green bin is split, damaged or lost?

If your green bin is split or damaged the refuse crew will assess if it is serviceable and safe to use.

If it is not fit for purpose or the bin has been lost in the refuse vehicle, you will receive a notification through your letter box and a new bin will be provided for you free of charge.

If your bin is lost/stolen then you must telephone our Contact Centres on 01246 242424 to order a new one. Please note that there is a charge for replacement bins.

Our standards are

·  To collect and empty all correctly presented bins in accordance with the green waste scheme calendar.

·  To let you know at the time of collection if there is a reason why we cannot empty your bin.

·  To return your bin to its collection point after emptying.
