Group Members: Due: 12/22

Great Moments in Civil Rights Commission

The civil rights movement was a passionate, long fight towards African Americans gaining their political freedom.
African Americans used strong organization and nonviolent tactics to confront the South’s policies of segregation
and racial inequality. As the movement moved forward, civil rights activities broke down numerous racial barriers
through continued social protest and the prompting of landmark legislation.

Task
You have been selected to serve on the Great Moments in Civil Rights Commission! Your committee has been tasked with establishing the most important and influential event of the Civil Rights Movement (1950 to 1963). As a member of this committee you must research an assigned event and prepare a presentation that will effectively convince other members of the commission to select your event as the most important event.

But, there is a catch!
Your event must be presented using only visual technology. In other words, you will not be available to speak on behalf of your event. This means that you must make your presentation as interactive and emotionally meaningful as possible.

Remember, you must convince others that your event is the most significant event of the Civil Rights Movement!

Graded Components:

There are four [4] technical components to this assignment

1.  Research (15 points)

Limited amount of research time will be given in class.

§  Library Research Schedule

o  Friday, December 12th (full block)

o  Tuesday, December 16th (after lunch)

2.  Exhibition (30 points)

q  Component 1:
One-sided handout that your classmates’ can fill in based on your presentation [10 pts]

q  Component 2:
Presentation Material (i.e., high quality interactive visual aids) [20 pts]

3.  Technology (10 points)

You must incorporate technology into your presentation.

q  Special equipment needed for the presentations must be requested 3 days in advance.

§  We will have a lap top for each project on presentation day, but let me know in advance if you will need internet access for your presentation.

§  If you are afraid your technology may not be compatible with school computers, check this in advance. Technical difficulties will be reflected in your technology grade.

q  Remember, you will not be in attendance when your presentation is being viewed. This means you should make it interactive and emotionally meaningful. You want everyone viewing it to believe it is the most significant event from the Civil Rights era.

q  Ideas: PowerPoint, skit (video-taped), media clips (video/music/sound),
pictures (lots of pictures!), and/or interviews (can be fictional, based on key players).

4.  Team Evaluations (10 points)

q  You will evaluate the work of your group members, and your group members will evaluate you!

Teamwork is essential!

Individual team-member grades will be averaged together and applied to the total points for this project.

This project is your summative assessment for Unit III.
It will be worth 65 points.

Content-Specific Requirements:

q  A brief summary of the event.

q  Circumstances leading up to and surrounding the event.

q  Location.

q  Dates.

q  Key players.

q  Goals.

q  Results.

q  Enduring Legacy.

§  Why is this event still important today?

§  Why is this event more important than any other event?

§  Provide evidence to support your claims!

On exhibition day, the civil rights commission will vote for the most
significant event of the Civil Rights Era. Voting will take place by a closed ballot.
The winning committee will receive bonus points for this project.

For those of you who are “tech savvy”, you may choose to experiment with some of these online resources. If you effectively use these resources, you will be guaranteed an 8/10 for technology integration!

o  Voice Thread – http://voicethread.com

o  You can create multi-media slideshows with this.

o  Blabberize - http://blabberize.com/

o  You can create “talking” images! This would be cool if you want to do a mock interview or speech by a key player. You could use their picture and record yourself speaking!

o  Wordle – http://www.wordle.net/

o  You can create “word clouds” of text about your topic. This could be a neat conclusion to your presentation.

o  To use the word clouds, you need to capture a print screen image of the word cloud.
Ask for help if you do not know how to use the print screen function on your keyboard.
