GREAT DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN BRAZIL

FOR ITALIAN GREEN ECONOMY COMPANIES

Today in Bologna,Rimini Fiera and Ecomondo promoted the presentationof a Report by Abrielpe commissioned by ICE Brazil on the situation of waste in Brazil

A market mainly managed by private firms; large urban areas and a strategy focusing on composting and biogas place Italian companies at the forefront

Rimini, 4thJuly 2016 – Italian firms ready to answer the needs of Brazil. The South American country represent a great development opportunity for Italian green economy companies. Rimini Fiera, which has been organizing Fimai Ecomondo Brazil in Sao Paulo since 2015, and whose Ecomondo has been the reference exhibition in the Italian and European environmental sector for the past 20 years, is working on connecting these two realities, with excellent opportunities for mutual satisfaction.

Today in Bologna, at the headquarters of the Emilia-Romagna Regional Authorities, business potential made the object of a workshop promoted by Ecomondo which saw the participation of some 25 among the leading sector companies, interested in the presentation of the Report on the situation of waste in Brazil, and in opportunities for Italian companies to meet the demand of a market expanding at a fast pace.

The study presented was commissioned by ICE Brazil (the Brazilian branch of the Italian Trade Promotion Agency) and carried out by ABRELPE (Associação Brasileira de Empresas de Limpeza Pública e Resíduos Especiais). The presentation saw the participation of Anna Pallante (ICE), Carlos Silva (CEO of Abrelpe), researcher Gabriela Otego Sartini, Ruben Sacerdoti (Emilia-Romagna Regional Authorities), Marco Ricci (CIC Consorzio Italiano Compostatori) and Professor Fabio Fava, Head of Ecomondo’s Technical-Scientific Committee.

“There are three main aspects making Brazil an attractive market for Italian green economy companies – explained Gabriela Otego Sartini. The first is that in Brazil over 65% of urban waste is managed by private firms; the second is represented by the fact that the country’s strategy is focused on the production of biogas and compost, sectors in which Italy plays a leading role; third, the presence of large urban areas in which to develop new waste treatmentplants. Brazil is extremely dynamic in this sector, and ready to set up plants making use of proven technologies taking into account management costs which in Brazil are rather low. The next edition of Fimai Ecomondo Brasil in Sao Paolo and that of Ecomondo at Rimini Fiera will represent further essential steps to turn a cooperation that appears to be highly feasible into reality”.

As to waste, in 2014 in Brazil the total amount of urban solid waste was slightly over 71 million tons. The ratio between the waste produced and its collection amounts to 90.6%, with considerable differences, however, among the various geographical areas, while slightly over 7 million tons of waste were not collected and their disposal is either unknown or inappropriate in the light of the legislation in force. “There are excellent cooperation prospects for Italian and Brazilian companies – confirmed Professor Fabio Fava, who heads Ecomondo’s Technical-Scientific Committee – considering the fact that the South American country is adopting new and stringent rules and regulations in the environmental sector, often in line with those already in force in Europe, particularly with reference to the protection of the environment and its resources, and the separation and reuse of waste. This generates a new need for research and innovation and, as a consequence, new market opportunities, interesting for a country such as Italy which has followed the same pathway in the past few years, with companies ready to provide support withwell developed and tested procedures and skills in the various regulatory sectors”.

While waiting for the next editions of Fimai Ecomondo Brasil (4th to 6th October 2016) and Ecomondo (8th to 11th November 2016), Rimini Fiera has been planning meetings among sector members with a view to promoting trade agreements makingthe most – during the said exhibitions – of the great opportunities arising from initiatives such as these.
