Catalog Description: Get stronger, leaner, and healthier! In this class, students will execute weight and strength training moves with correct form, resulting in reduced body fat, increased lean muscle, improved muscle sculpting, and more efficient calorie burning. The 1 credit course is perfect for your busy schedule, providing an intense, 30-minute, non-stop workout of all major muscle groups.

Course Description: This course is designed to provide a safe and effective strength training workout while targeting specific muscle groups and increasing functional strength. Each class will consist of the following:

-  Warm up

-  Muscular endurance exercises using one’s body weight to target the core; these muscles include the abdominals, glutes, hips, and back

-  Muscular strength exercises using free weights and resistance bands

-  Cool down and static stretching

Course Objective and Goals: In this class, students will learn about the core muscles and how those muscles assist in functional strength and injury prevention. Students will learn to execute weight and strength training moves with correct form, showing increased strength and endurance. Students will also increase flexibility through a variety of stretching exercises.

Measurements: The student will :

Identify the core muscles / Demonstrate at least one exercise for each major core muscle.
Demonstrate proper form and execution of strength training moves, using one’s body weight as well as free weights and resistance bands / Attend and actively participate in at least 80% of scheduled classes.
Increase muscular strength, muscular endurance, and flexibility / Measure muscular strength, muscular endurance, and flexibility with tools provided in-class, throughout the semester.
Improve core strength / Attend and actively participate in at least 80% of scheduled classes.

You are required to mark your attendance of each class in the provided Attendance Record booklet.

Method of instruction: This course is taught by instructor demonstration with students following the instructor’s movements and instructions. Students will be taught in a group fitness environment.

Recommended Equipment:

-  Comfortable and supportive athletic shoes with non-marking soles

-  Proper activity attire

-  Bottle of water & Small towel

-  Required Text: There is no text required for this course.

A completed medical history evaluation will be required before starting this course.

Grading system: This class is based on the Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory system. A Satisfactory (S) indicates that a student has passed the course. Credits will be earned for a (S) grade. An Unsatisfactory (U) indicates that a student has not passed the course; no credit is earned. Grade Point Average (GPA) is not affected by S/U courses. Students can withdraw from the course by the semester deadline, April 5, 2017. Withdraw (W) is reported on the transcript. No credit is earned for a (W).

Students should be aware that earning a “U” or “W” in a PEX course could affect financial aid if you fall below the required number of earned credits for the semester.

Auditing this course: If you want to participate in this class but do not want to receive credit, you may enroll as an auditor. When you audit, you are not obligated to attend or participate in class activities. You do not get a reduced fee as an auditor. You can arrange for audit status by getting the instructor-signed form in the PEX office and taking it to the Admissions and Records Office on or before April 5, 2017.

Participation: Those who actively participate in 80% of the classes offered during the semester will obtain a (S). This allows you 6 absences. Should any special circumstances arise that may affect your participation in the class, please contact me right away, and I will make arrangements for you to make up classes.

One class will be held during finals week, and attendance is required.

BONUS HOURS for use of Fitness Center

For every 1 credit of PEX that you take, you may use the fitness center for 8 bonus hours at no additional cost to you.

Since this is a 1 credit class, you may come in on your own for 8 hours during this Spring 2017 semester. Please sign in on the “Bonus Hours” sheet in the office.
