Graphic Design II 1523 Scope and Sequence

This course offers a more in-depth coverage of Adobe Photoshop CS6and Adobe Illustrator CS6 as used in business based Graphic Design. Students will create artwork to be used in professional business design and advertising: logos, book covers, magazine illustration, and other printed materials. Modern Graphic Artists will be showcased and students will create pieces in different areas of design such as Identity Design, Promotional Design, and Branding.

  1. Defining Design (5 days)
  2. Identify applications of graphic design (visual identities, promotional, information design, ads) *EnL
  3. Types of sketches: taking an idea from brainstorming ideas in thumbnails to comp to final piece
  4. Introducing and collecting pieces for the “Source Book”
  5. Reviewing the Elements and Principles of Design
  6. Pictograms: creating information design as well as reviewing Illustrator basics *HL, *CL
  7. Client Based Design: Combining Elements and Principles, sketch process, and Illustrator to create a symbol for a class client

  1. Adobe Illustrator :Logos(8 days)
  2. Identify types of logo designs *EnL
  3. Re-inventing local logos with application of Elements and Principles of design
  4. Intro to “Business Identities”: students create a fake business as design client for future projects *EnL
  5. Type design; using type illustratively
  6. Use a variety of vector editing tools (eraser, path eraser, eyedropper, direct selection)
  7. Create two original Logos for the student created business showing client considerations and appropriate type design
  8. Creating “mini-you” to create more advanced pieces using Pathfinder, gradient, pen tool, and other tools that need more practice for detail

  2. Working with shapes and blends and pathfinder panel
  3. Using Layers in Illustrator
  4. Unity and differentiation in visual identities
  5. Create Business Card *EnL, Envelope, and Stationary for the student created business; must show unity with original Logo Piece

  1. Adobe Photoshop: Book Cover Design & Advertising(10 days)
  2. Identify and explore the Elements of an Advertisement (print) and “points of departure” *GA
  3. Using gradients, selection tools, typographic elements, special effects, and clipping masks
  4. Applying the Elements and Principles of Design to pieces while considering client needs
  5. Using original photography to create a variety of original usable design pieces and creating an end product, a book cover, with finished and altered pieces (“10 Pieces & Book Cover” project)
  6. Exploring Elements of print advertising and creating an Ad (magazine or billboard)

  2. Create a Final Piece using Adobe Illustrator and/or Adobe Photoshop to show illustrative qualities of design (Magazine illustration pieces) *EnL
  3. Showing unity in a series of design pieces through the Final Project piece
  4. Create project portfolio and prepare for participation in the Art Show

Objective and skills test will be minimal through the semester because of large number of art pieces that “test” their skills.
