Read to Rebuild Haiti
EXTRA CREDIT
What is it?
Our class effort to participate in the world community by using our reading time in Excel, and at home, to reach out to the people of another culture (Haiti) in their time of need.
How do we do it?
Just read at the beginning of PM Excel, or at home (novels for another class assignment count!), like you do every day. The only addition to this is that your reading will count toward your Spanish/culture/foreign language grade. When you read in Excel, or at home for another class, you will fill out the reading log (see below) to document all the reading you have done for this assignment.
How it works:
1. Get a Sponsor -
Get at least one sponsor (you can get up to five) who will donate an amount of money for each book you complete during third quarter. Have each sponsor sign the sponsor form in this packet where they will pledge up to $2 (no more than two dollars in necessary) per book you complete during the third quarter.
Ask these kinds of people to be your sponsor(s):
- a parent
- a teacher
- an adult neighbor
- an older brother, sister, or cousin
(High school or college- aged only, please)
- an adult family friend
- an adult family member
2. Fill out the reading log every day -
Every time you read some pages in a book for Excel, or for a novel assignment at home, write a 2-3 sentence summary of what you read for the day. At the end of each log entry you will add a detail that relates to what we are studying in class such as a vocabulary word, words, a phrase, or a sentence, or something that relates to any grammar or cultural concepts we are studying. You can find your first reading log in this packet. You will turn in your reading logs every Friday. A parent or your Excel teacher must sign your reading logs at the end of week before they are turned in to get reading credit for the assignment.
3. Collect money from your sponsor(s) –
During the week of 5/16 - 5/20, bring your sponsors’ pledges in a sealed envelope with your name on it to Ms. Funke. The money will be forwarded to relief efforts for Haiti through the American Red Cross. We will have a pizza party when we make our donation at on the Smart board.
