PREREQUISITE:Computer Applications and Graphic Arts

COURSE DESCRIPTION:This course is designed toprovide students with the knowledge and skills to produce the Husker yearbook. Students will learn appropriate layout techniques, increase writing and proofreading skills, maintain yearbook sales records, and sell advertisement space to local merchants. Students will be expected to meet all deadlines, participate in yearbook and advertisement sales, and attend extracurricular events to report and photograph district activities as assigned.

LEARNING GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:

  • Apply introductory principles.
  • Identify functions/purposes of yearbook and demonstrate knowledge of the implications for coverage and content.
  • Identify parts of yearbook and physical processes by which a yearbook is created.
  • Take candid photographs that capture mood and show actions.
  • Crop pictures to improve composition and to fit for size and shape.
  • Sell yearbook ads.
  • Create basic yearbook layouts.
  • Manipulate typography and graphic elements to create yearbook spreads.
  • Demonstrate proofreading skills.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

Participation:A 15-point participation grade will be entered on most class days. If you are absent (Excused or Unexcused), you will receive a 0 until you make up the time before school,

after school, or during seminar.

Activities during school:Spirit Week, assemblies, classes—pictures will need to be taken during yearbook class or whenever you can—be respectful of ALL teachers and their classes

Quizzes and Tests:Announced quizzes and tests will be given.

Work ethics:You will be evaluated on skills that are essential to being

successful at school or work.

Absences:Punctualityand attendance is very important. PLAN FOR DEADLINES!

Late Work:Late work may result in a 0 or a penalty for that assignment.

Portfolio:Keep handouts, notes, samples, and graded work.

Supplies Needed:BRING EVERY DAY:

  • Pen and Pencil
  • Loose-leaf notebook paper
  • Folder with pockets (not needed if you already have binder)
  • 3-ring binder for Portfolio & 5 page dividers
  • Good positive attitude!

HomeworkPhotographs and summaries of events (some outside of school time)

EVALUATION:You will be evaluated on deadlines, proofreading, homework, classwork, teamwork, quizzes, tests, work ethics, and portfolio. Total points will be used.

YEARBOOK POLICIES:Do not remove photos from the electronic files unless you need them for your spreads.

Do not show yearbook photos to non-staff members.

Yearbook pictures are for yearbook ONLY.

Always follow correct procedures for computer use.

Do not remove yearbook materials from the room or leave out after class.

Deadlines are important.

When selling ads, you may not wear jeans, shorts, T-shirts, or tennis shoes. Dress professionally and wear yearbook badge.

Wear yearbook badge if taking photographs for events.

Be sure to make entry on camera check-out sheet when taking the school camera out of the room.

Keep a log or calendar of all events covered or photographed.

Copying or sharing assignments or other academic dishonesty will result in a 0 on the assignment. School district guidelines for academic dishonesty will be followed.

You will be required to sign the Technology User Agreement before using the school technology. If your user agreement would be revoked, you will not be able to complete the demonstrations or assignments for this course, which would result in a 0 for those assignments.
