Workshop: Safe insulin practice in General Practice

Presenters: Dr Wendy Watson, Consultant and Linda Caie, Diabetes Nurse Manager

In our delivery of holistic diabetes care patient safety is high on the agenda. There is an abundance of guidelines and literature regarding insulin therapy but still we find incidents where best practice has not been followed and a patient’s care has been compromised; some leading to catastrophic consequences.

In this workshop we will explore some ‘real life’ examples and discuss ‘top tips’ for insulin safety. As we gain more experience in primary care with insulin therapy we will share good ideas and concerns. There will be opportunity for discussion in this interactive session and it will be useful to those who are novices or who have experience in the prescribing, dispensing or administration of insulin.

With the rising prevalence of obesity and later childbearing in our increasingly multi-cultural society many women now face the challenge of Type 2 diabetes affecting their pregnancy. The majority of such patients will be receiving their diabetes care in general practice and for those in the childbearing years pregnancy planning should be viewed as an integral part of this care.

This workshop will explore the key factors of preconception counselling including weight loss prior to pregnancy, glycaemic management with diet, metformin +/- insulin and the additional foetal and obstetric risks associated with Type 2 diabetes.

Workshop: Practice Outreach – The experience so far

Presenters: Dr Ken McHardy, Consultant and Dr Gordon Wilson, GP

The majority of patients are now managed partially or totally within Primary Care settings and it is appropriate therefore that specialist services have refocused some of their input into the support of Practice Teams rather than seeing every individual patient. A programme of regular visits by Diabetologists, specialist nurses and sometimes other members of the specialist team has been building up across the Region since its inception in Inverbervie in 2006. This workshop will review the current status of the Outreach Programme, describe some of the various ways it works in practice and consider prospects for its further extension.
