Graduate student position: stakeholder participation in modeling forest futures

Rissman Research Group

University of Wisconsin-Madison

Summer/Fall 2016

I am seeking a graduate student to conduct social science research on participatory modeling. Specifically, we will examinestakeholderparticipation in creating scenarios and mechanistic models of potential forest change. Models of forest change are increasingly developed to suggest the potential impacts of forest management, climate change including increased fire and drought, and housing development. Policymakers are interested in quantifying and operationalizing dimensions of social and ecological resilience, which mechanistic models can inform. Our research will contribute to understanding the social processes in participatory modeling that contribute to stakeholder learning, risk perceptions, and decision-making. We will also examine the role of mechanistic modeling in shaping how people think about social-ecological futures. One focal region is likely to be the northern Rocky mountains; if that region is selected, the applicant would visit the region to conduct research.

Applicants should have a prior degree in natural resources, geography, political science, planning, environmental policy, sociology, or related field. Previous research experience, social science background, and experience with coupled social and environmental systems are preferred. Experience with a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods are desired. Experience with interviews, surveys, or collaborative research desired but not required. Strong GPA, GRE scores, and oral and written communication skills are required. Applicants bringing diverse backgrounds and perspectives to the research program are encouraged to apply. The student in this position would likely enroll through the Forestry degree program. This position is for an MS or PhD student. Ideally, the applicant would start on research in summer 2016 and then begin coursework in fall 2016. See more about our research at:

Primary Duties

  • Help design and conduct a study of stakeholder participation in the development of modeled scenarios of potential forest change
  • Examine stakeholder perceptions of the likely social impacts of modeled forest changes
  • Conduct document review of forest management plans
  • Participate in workshop design and execution
  • Conductinterviews and potentially focus groups or an online survey with participating stakeholders
  • Analyze qualitative and quantitative results
  • Write research publications and outreach documents
  • Maintain active communications with participants

To apply, email CV, cover letter, and contact information for three references to . Please specify whether you are seeking an MS or PhD, and when you are available to start (between June and September, 2016). I will invite qualified applicants to apply directly to the Forestry program (the Nelson Institute Environment & Resources program is also an option). PhD applicants are not required to have an MS already for Forestry. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until an applicant is hired.

Thank you,
