  1. Briefly describe your garden project including its major goals. Please include a description of activities. (150 words or less)

Orchard trees and bushes will be planted in an open area of Central City Park. The orchard will provide interest, beauty and activities for those enjoying the park. The trees and bushes will be planted by the Forman Friends 4H club and Sargent County Master Gardeners. The produce will be offered to the Sargent County Food Pantry as well as, other community residents. The 4H club with guidance from the Master Gardeners will be responsible for planting, caring for the trees and for harvesting the fruit.

  1. How will your project make a difference to itschildren? (150 words or less)

The project will be hands-on education for the 4H club. The club consists of twenty members, ages six to seventeen. They will learn how to plant trees, what elements the trees need to grow and how to harvest the fall crop. Sargent County Master Gardeners and Sargent County Extension educators will teach some of the basics of tree development. Topics will include: pollination, protection efforts for control of insects and diseases, fertilizers, soil types and how the climate can affect tree growth. Other area youth will be encouraged to also get involved. The youth will also learn the importance that apples and other berries can have for a good, balanced diet.

  1. How will your project make a difference in your community? (150 words or less)

The orchard project will be featured in the local newspaper and on social media. Community members will be encouraged to take part in the project and the project will be displayed for the enjoyment of everyone. Adults in the community will appreciate how our youth are contributing to the beauty and enjoyment of the community through this project. The orchard will add value and beauty to that area of the city. The Food Pantry will benefit from the fruit that the orchard produces. Senior Citizens from the local nursing home and assisted living facility can schedule outings to the orchard and admire the work that our youth are doing in the community.

  • City of Forman is purchasing the trees and bushes
  • Forman Friends 4H club is doing much of the planting and caring for orchard
  • Sargent County Master Gardeners are assisting by providing expertise in gardening
  • Sargent County Extension Educators are providing educational materials
  • Forman Parks Department is doing the mowing around the trees
  • Sheyenne Garden Center is providing advice and supplying the tree stock
  • Menards is the supplier of a watering system, fertilizer and insect control

The Sargent County Extension Office will help to support this Junior Master Gardener Project by helping to recruit youth to participate actively in the program. Extension Agents will teach hands-on lessons on tree planting and care, fruit and tree varieties, harvesting fruits, health benefits, and pollination. The Extension Office will help to publicize the activities of the project in the local paper, 4-H newsletter, and our Facebook page.
I support this project and will work with the coordinator to ensure a positive educational experience for the youth.
