Data Management Project

Remembrance Day: Year of the Veteran

Name: ______Class: _____

Outcome F3: Select, defend, and use appropriate data collection methods and evaluate issues to be considered when collecting data.

Outcome F4: Construct a Histogram

Outcome F7: Formulate statistics projects to explore current issues from within mathematics, other subject areas, or the world of students.

In our unit on “Data Management” we have worked towards achieving an understanding of the various curriculum “outcomes” listed above. In this project we will assess our level of understanding of these outcomes, as well as make use of our IEI technology and considerable software applications. As an added component we shall study the impact of various conflicts in our history. Since 2005 is the “Year of the Veteran” it makes sense to use our efforts to remember and reflect on the sacrifices that Canadians have made to maintain peace and order in the world.

What I Am Given:

·  Opportunity to learn how to develop a PowerPoint® presentation using IEI technologies.

·  Opportunity to learn how to develop an Inspiration® mind-map for planning my project.

·  Opportunity to learn how to develop a graph using Microsoft Excel® or Appleworks® spreadsheet software.

·  Opportunity to “cut and paste” from a spreadsheet program to a PowerPoint® presentation.

·  Statistical data provided by the Royal Canadian Legion©

·  Website addresses where information on how to use the above software can be found as well as data on world conflicts visited by Canadian Armed Forces.

What I Need to Do:

·  Develop a research project plan using Inspiration®. A copy of this plan must be submitted prior to completing the project.

Things to include in your plan:

What conflicts have Canadians participated in since 1900?

How many Canadians have participated in each conflict?

What was the impact of each conflict to Canadians?

Where am I getting my information?

What websites am I going to use?

·  Develop a PowerPoint® presentation with a minimum of ten (10) slides based on your own research (books, data supplied by teacher, internet, etc...). Please include:

1.  a histogram showing the participation in war of Canadians from 1900-1950 and 1950-2000.

2.  a bar graph showing the participation in WWII of Canadians by province.

3.  a histogram showing

4.  a basic bibliography page listing all resources cited in the presentation.

·  Present your PowerPoint® presentation in class. Be prepared to answer a few questions on the data display and data analysis.

How Will I Be Assessed?

·  A self assessment will be used to assess the “planning process” used in the development of this project. (after day 1)

·  A peer assessment will be used to assess the presentation in class.

·  A scoring rubric will be used to assess the “product” (PowerPoint®)

·  A self assessment will be used to assess the group “process” you went through to develop this project.
