Grade point average (GPA) calculations

This document should be read in conjunction with “Marks and standards for HETAC-accredited courses” (3AS06), which sets out Institute policy for the assessment of learners.

The table below lists the grades which can be awarded for each module:

Grade / Percentage band / Grade Point Value / Credits awarded / Indicative quality of performance
A / 80 - 100 / 4.00 / Yes / Excellent
B+ / 70 - 79 / 3.50 / Yes / Very Good
B / 60 - 69 / 3.00 / Yes / Good
B- / 55 - 59 / 2.75 / Yes / Above Average
C+ / 50 - 54 / 2.50 / Yes / Fair
C / 40 - 49 / 2.00 / Yes / Pass
D / 35 - 39 / 1.50 / Yes / Poor
F / <35 / 0.00 / No / Fail
G / 40+ / - / Yes / Pass in pass/fail module (not used in GPA calculation)
I / No / Deferral of result
X / Yes / Student exempted from the requirements of the module because of previous equivalent learning
W / Withdrew
NP / Not Present
WH / Withhold result

Assessment of Aggregate Performance

The aggregate performance of an individual student is represented by the student's Grade Point Average (GPA) in the examination for each stage or semester of the course followed.

In order to determine the GPA for a particular student, the following calculation is carried out.

(a)A Grade Point Value is assigned to the alphabetic grade a student has gained for each subject (see Table above),

(b)The Grade Point Value is multiplied by the Credits (available from the Approved Course Schedule) to arrive at a Grade Credit Score for each subject/module,

(c)The Grade Credit Scores are then added together and divided by the credits for the stage or semester to arrive at the GPA.

(d)Credits gained as a result of being awarded an X or a G in a module are not included in the calculation of the GPA.

Examples of Calculation of GPA

To pass a candidate must have 60 credits (unless exemption granted) and a GPA above 2.00

1.Calculation of GPA where a pass is achieved
Module / (A)
Credits / (B)
Grade / (C)
Grade Point Value / (D)
Grade Point Score(AxC=D)
Construction Technology / 10 / D / 1.5 / 15
Site Management / 5 / C / 2.0 / 10
Civil Engineering Design / 10 / C / 2.0 / 20
Mathematics / 5 / B / 3.0 / 15
Advanced Surveying / 10 / B / 3.0 / 30
Quality Management / 5 / C / 2.0 / 10
Project / 15 / B / 3.0 / 45
TOTAL / 60 / 145

The candidate's GPA is calculated as: Total grade score (145) / Total credits for stage (60) = 2.42 = Pass

Note, this candidate has received a compensation pass in Construction Technology and does not have to repeat that module

2.Calculation of GPA where a Merit/Distinction or Honours award is achieved
Module / (A)
Credits / (B)
Grade / (C)
Grade Point Value / (D)
Grade Point Score(AxC=D)
Construction Technology / 10 / B / 3.0 / 30
Site Management / 5 / C / 2.0 / 10
Civil Engineering Design / 10 / B / 3.0 / 30
Mathematics / 5 / B / 3.0 / 15
Advanced Surveying / 10 / B / 3.0 / 30
Quality Management / 5 / C / 2.0 / 10
Project / 15 / B / 3.0 / 45
TOTAL / 60 / 170

The candidate's GPA is calculated as: Total grade score (170) / Total credits for stage (60) = 2.83 = Pass with Merit Grade 2 or 2nd Class Honours Grade 2.

3.Calculation of GPA where a fail is achieved
Module / (A)
Credits / (B)
Grade / (C)
Grade Point Value / (D)
Grade Point Score(AxC=D)
Construction Technology / 0 / F / 0 / 0
Site Management / 5 / C / 2.0 / 10
Civil Engineering Design / 10 / C / 2.0 / 20
Mathematics / 5 / B / 3.0 / 15
Advanced Surveying / 10 / B / 3.0 / 30
Quality Management / 5 / C / 2.0 / 10
Project / 15 / B / 3.0 / 45
TOTAL / 50 / 130

The candidate's GPA is calculated as: Total grade score (130) / Total credits for stage (60) = 2.16 = Fail

Note, this candidate has 50 credits and a GPA of 2.16 and therefore must repeat Construction Technology

Module / (A)
Credits / (B)
Grade / (C)
Grade Point Value / (D)
Grade Point Score(AxC=D)
Construction Technology / 10 / D / 1.5 / 15
Site Management / 5 / C / 2.0 / 10
Civil Engineering Design / 10 / C / 2.0 / 20
Mathematics / 5 / C / 2.0 / 10
Advanced Surveying / 10 / D / 1.5 / 15
Quality Management / 5 / C / 2.0 / 10
Project / 15 / C / 2.0 / 30
TOTAL / 60 / 110

The candidate's GPA is calculated as: Total grade score (110) / Total credits for stage (60) = 1.83 = Fail

Note, this candidate has 60 credits but a GPA of 1.83 and therefore must repeat at least one of the two modules with a D grade. An increase of the D to a C in a 10 credit module would increase the GPA by 0.08. This on its own would not increase the GPA above 2.00, so the second module could be repeated, or an increase in one module from a D to a C+ or higher must be achieved.

  1. Calculation of GPA where the candidate has an exemption in one subject (non-award year)

Module / (A)
Credits / (B)
Grade / (C)
Grade Point Value / (D)
Grade Point Score(AxC=D)
Construction Technology / 10 / C / 2.0 / 20
Site Management / 5* / X / - / -
Civil Engineering Design / 10 / C+ / 2.5 / 25
Mathematics / 5 / A / 4.0 / 20
Advanced Surveying / 10 / A / 4.0 / 40
Quality Management / 5 / C / 2.0 / 10
Project / 15 / B+ / 3.5 / 52.5
TOTAL / 60 / 167.5

The candidate's GPA is calculated as:-

Total grade score (167.50) / Total credits (55) = 3.05 = Pass

  1. Calculation of GPA for the award stage of a course structured in semesters.

Module / (A)
Credits / (B)
Grade / (C)
Grade Point Value / (D)
Grade Point Score(AxC=D)
SEMESTER 1
Financial Management 1 / 10 / B / 3.0 / 30
Management 1 / 5 / C+ / 2.5 / 12.5
Accounting & Audit Control 1 / 5 / D / 1.5 / 7.5
Taxation 1 / 5 / C / 2.0 / 10
Company Law 1 / 5 / A / 4.0 / 20
TOTAL / 30 / 80

Candidate's GPA for Semester 1 = 80/30 = 2.67

SEMESTER 2
Financial Management 2 / 10 / A / 4.0 / 40
Management 2 / 5 / B+ / 3.5 / 17.5
Accounting & Audit Control 2 / 5 / C / 2.0 / 10
Taxation 2 / 5 / B / 3.0 / 15
Company Law 2 / 5 / A / 4.0 / 20
TOTAL / 30 / 102.5

Candidate's GPA for Semester 2 = 102.5/30 = 3.42

Candidate's cumulative GPA for Award Stage = (2.67+3.42)/2 = 3.05 = Pass with Merit - Grade 1

The grid below shows the change in overall GPA with each change in grade, by credit value.
