Independent Novel Portfolio
Grade 9 English - Academic (ENG1D)
Summative Evaluation, Part I
This part of your summative evaluation is worth 10% of your final grade and involves the preparation and submission of a variety of components.
You will choose a novel from the list of award-winning youth-fiction novels handed out by your teacher. Each student must choose a different novel (this process will be decided upon by your teacher).
Follow the important stages of the process of writing to prepare each component of your portfolio.
Good work habits will be necessary for the successful completion of this summative evaluation. As an assessment of these important learning skills, particularly initiative and working independently, your process work will be collected and checked for completion in the weeks before the final due date.
A variety of tasks (A, B, C, D, E) will need to be completed. First of all, choose one (1) of the options provided from each of the following sections regarding Task A, Task B, and Task C. Evidence of the full writing process (brainstorming, first draft, edited/revised draft(s), and a polished, neat final copy) is mandatory for each of these tasks. Please note: Each of the three activities should focus on a different part of the novel. Marks will be significantly deducted if 2 or more activities are focused on the same event.
For Task D, students will be required to provide a summary of their novel printed from the internet.
Task D, followed by the completed work for Task A, Task B, and Task C, will be submitted inside the portfolio you have made in the form of a book jacket or poster as described below.
NOTE: While some time for reading the novel and preparing the written material will be given in class, students will complete most of this novel portfolio on their own time.
Task A - Descriptive Piece
Create a vivid description that expresses your character's viewpoint about another character, a significant place or an event. Choose one (1) of the following:
a 300 – 400 word descriptive paragraph(using highly descriptive language – imagery, similes, metaphors, personification, etc… – and carefully selected vocabulary to evoke a particular feeling or mood)
OR
a 16-line (min) poem(may be rhymed or unrhymed, but must include the clear use of poetic devises such as imagery, similes, metaphors, personification, onomatopoeia, etc…)
Task B –Summary/newspaper report
Choose one (1) of the following:
an approximately 500 – word (fictionalized) newspaper report of a key event in the novel, formatted and organized according to the conventions of journalistic writing (including the 5w’s + H – who? what? when? where? why? how?)
OR
a 300-word summary of a key or climax chapter
Task C - Creative Writing
Choose one (1) of the following:
a 500 –word script involving at least two characters from the novel in an original scene you create (the scene must fit the storyline)
OR
a 500 word missing chapter or a new ‘final’ chapter (imitating the style of the author and using the same point of view)
Task D – Plot Summary
You are responsible to find a plot summary of your novel on the internet and print it from the web page such that the text and the internet address are all on the same page.
Task E – Portfolio Cover
Your entire novel portfolio must be contained in a folder of your own making, with a creative visual on its cover representing a theme, conflict, character(s) or event that takes place in the novel. Be sure your portfolio cover includes the title of the text, the author’s name, and your name. Be creative and have some fun with it. Some ideas could be a portrait of a main character, a drawing of an important scene, an adventure map of a journey that your main character takes, or a drawing of the main setting or community in which the novel is set.
A book jacket
OR
A movie poster
