Ten Commandments & Vocabulary

The Ten Commandments are:

  1. I am the Lord your God. You shall honor no other God but me.
  2. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.
  3. Remember to keep holy the Lord's Day.
  4. Honor your father and your mother.
  5. You shall not kill.
  6. You shall not commit adultery.
  7. You shall not steal.
  8. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
  9. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife.
  10. You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods.

Vocabulary Words
Liturgy / Prayer by people when they worship God and honor saints. The official public prayer of the Church.
Liturgical / Any church practice such as hymns, prayers, and services.
Liturgical Calendar / Shows the seasons of the church year.
Ministers of the Church / Pope, Bishop, Priests, Deacons, Extraordinary Ministers, Altar Servers.
Bishop / Usual minister of Confirmation, but he can designate someone else.
Magisterium / The official teaching authority of the Church, consisting of the pope and the bishops.
Marks of the Church / One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic.
Social Justice / Opposing every form of injustice in society and working to promote justice for all people.
Baptism / Sacrament when our parents and godparents said “yes” to God promising Him we would continue to be faithful Catholics.
Renewal of Baptismal Promises / When we say “yes” to God promising Him we will continue to be faithful Catholics.
Confirmation / The Sacrament when the Holy Spirit comes down to us in a special way.
Chrism / A mixture of olive oil and balm, a perfume, used in the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Orders. It is blessed by the bishop during Holy Week.
Conscience / Our most basic awareness that some things are right and some things are wrong – when God speaks to us directly.
Our Father / Prayer that Jesus taught us, it is a summary of the Gospels.
Gospels / The “Good News” that the promised Savior in the Old Testament has come. Also gives us information about Jesus’ life and teachings.
Evangelization / Sharing the good news of Jesus and the love of God with all people, at all times.
Schism / Refusal to follow to the leadership of Peter’s successor, the Pope.
Heresy / A religious teaching that is against a Church belief revealed by God.
Eucharistic Fast / When those planning on receiving Communion abstain from all food & drink (except water) 1 hour before receiving Communion.
Real Presence / True presence of Jesus in the Eucharist.
Martyr / A person who willingly gives up his/her life rather than give up their Faith.
Missionary / To be Catholic, to be ready and willing to share our Faith with others wherever we meet them.
Disciples / All people who try to follow Christ’s teachings.
Prophet / Someone who speaks on behalf of God, defends the truth, and works for justice.
Sponsor / A Catholic who is at least 16 years old, has received the Sacraments of Initiation, is an example of Christian living, is respected by the candidate, will help him/her grow their in faith and is in good standing with the Church.
