Course Expectations

-All math work is to be done in pencil – it is too difficult to make corrections with ink.

-Graph work is to be done on graph paper – the teacher can provide it if you don’t have any.

-It is expected that you will show your work for all math assignments – you may get partial credit if the procedure is correct, even if the answer is incorrect. You may redo any assignment if you are not happy with the mark – it will need to be done on your own time, with a reasonable deadline set by your teacher. Please store unit work in a binder until the unit is over.

-You need to use a ruler for drawing straight lines – this is essential for graphing and geometry.

-You will need a protractor for the geometry unit – the teacher does not provide them.

-You will need colored pencils for graphing and geometry visuals.

Course Description

-Enriched – provides challenging work (based on Grade 6 outcomes) for students who excel in math. This program is based upon parent and teacher recommendations.

-Regular –standard Grade 6 program, based upon recommendations from Grade 5.

-Adapted – Adaptations are made to the regular Grade 6 program without changing or deleting outcomes – these include amount of work covered, test layout/questions and support, extension of deadlines and/or amount of reading/writing required for the course.

-Individual – This program is designed for students who are not able to meet Grade 6 math outcomes. All course topics remain the same, but activities are based upon the student’s abilities.

Course Components

-Mental Math – math problems that are done without the use of pencil/paper for computation

-Figure It Out- quick problem solving activities that students complete on paper.

-Skills Log – activities that are done to reinforce basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and problem solving skills. You will need a duo-tang for your skills log.

-Regular Classroom Assignments – textbook work, sheet work and center work.

-Unit checks –At the end of each unit, put your work into a duo-tang. Your teacher will check it, and you will then take it home for your parents to sign.

-Math Knowledge Cards – Index cards that emphasize key points and important information for each unit. You are allowed to use these knowledge cards for all assignments, quizzes and tests.

-Tests and Quizzes – Tests and quizzes are given throughout the year to ensure that outcomes are understood. Tests will be put in unit duo-tangs and returned with the unit work.

*There are no percentages assigned to each component because term marks are outcomes based – letter grades will be used for assignments and term marks. All of the above components are used to determine which outcomes have been met throughout each term.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Letter Grades

All assignments and tests will be graded with letters – Grade 6 evaluation is outcomes based and therefore not done on a numerical or percentage basis.

A – student has met (and/or sometimes exceeded) all assignment/test expectations – he/she has demonstrated excellent knowledge of outcomes

B – student has met most assignment/test expectations – he/she has demonstrated very good/suitable knowledge of outcomes

C- student has met some assignment/test expectations - he/she has demonstrated an adequate overall knowledge of outcomes

D – student has rarely met assignment/test expectations -he/she is unable to demonstrate knowledge of many outcomes
