Channel 36, Glen Ridge's Municipal TV channel, has recently upgraded the station's equipment. This is expected to allow the station to increase its programming schedule and to provide new services.
Until recently, all of the programs that residents have been accustomed to watching on Channel 36, including town meetings, movies, and religious services, have been shown using DVD players or VCRs, just like those one has at home. But in December, the station took delivery of a new video server.
This is a specialized PC that is built to store and schedule video content. With this server, station volunteers can easily upload and schedule any videos provided in DVD format, or copy over standard MPEG-2 video files. As a result, this will allow the station to offer more extensive programming. The first addition to the regular programming is "The Giblin Report," which is provided by State Senator Thomas Giblin to all municipal channels in his district. Another feature of the new equipment is that the station's broadcast schedule can be set up for more than a month in advance.
The new equipment will also mean that borough council meetings can be captured directly onto the server, eliminating the use of VHS VCR recorders; and the staff is testing changes that would allow residents to download these meetings for viewing on their home computers or portable devices.
Similarly in the works are improvements to the channel 36 Web page so that up-to-the-minute information on program scheduling can be provided.
