GPTI Application for Summer Teaching: Due Nov. 22, 2013
Limited teaching appointments are available for Graduate Part-Time Instructors, depending on enrollments and funding. The Graduate Studies Committee will evaluate applications toward the end of each fall for appointments in the following summer, and it will also confirm with your teaching supervisors whether you have continued to do good work in the spring. Successful completion ofENGL 5392 is required to teach 2000-level lit courses. The committee will use the following criteria:
• Evidence of excellent teaching and teaching experience. More experienced teachers are more likely to succeed in teaching in the short, intensive summer terms. As a general rule, we do not allow people to teach a course in summer that they have not taught in a long semester. Students finishing ENGL 5392 in Spr 2014 are therefore not likely to have a 2000-level course approved.
• Progress toward the degree. Students making good progress will be more likely to succeed in teaching in the summer without affecting their academic work.
• Specific needs to take dissertation research or language courses in the summer term. These courses are often prohibitively expensive for students unless the students are GPTIs and thus receive in-state tuition.
MA students are eligible for summer teaching appointments, but because teaching excellence and experience are criteria, priority will usually be given to PhD students.
