Outcomes and Next Steps

As a result of the Construction and Energy Workforce Solutions Conference, held July 21, 2009, four key recommendations, and their supporting strategies, were selected for the energy industry action plan (see the Executive Summary in the Report). GWIB is ready to work with industry, state or local agencies, organizations and businesses to move from planning to implementation of the following recommendations:

Attraction: Create a buzz about jobs in the Maryland’s green economy by targeting varied audiences: youth, parents, working adults, and dislocated workers.

Pipeline Development: Increase the number of school systems and schools using the Career and Technology Education (CTE) program, and provide information and materials about energy, green building, clean technology and certifications designed for integration into the construction and development, environmental, agricultural and natural resource systems, and manufacturing, engineering and technology career clusters.

Training: Identify and develop short-term training courses that are aligned with industry needs and will prepare workers for jobs in the green economy.

Data Driven Policy Development: Institute a statewide data collection and analysis process to help the State focus training resources, track individuals from pre-apprenticeship to apprenticeship training and from two-year to four-year higher education training, and assist green business incubators with development and growth of small businesses.

Committee Members

Includes representatives from utilities that produce electricity from fossil, nuclear, and all forms of renewable fuels, as well as related construction, manufacturing and service organizations that support the energy industry. The energy cluster also includes a wide range of green businesses that manufacture, install, maintain and/or provide green products and services that improve energy efficiency and contribute to a cleaner environment.
