Good evening Pinckney families—

This week our Positive Action vocabulary and focus is on feelings and our Hero of the Week is Dr. Eliza Ann Grier

Dr. Eliza Ann Grier lived part of her life as a slave in Atlanta. In 1897, she became the first black woman licensed to practice medicine in Georgia.

After becoming a free women, Grier became a teacher and studied at Fisk University in Nashville. But she wanted to be a doctor. In 1890, Grier wrote to the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania, asking the dean if there was any way for a freed slave to receive assistance to join the profession.

Grier was admitted to the medical college, but with a challenging condition. To pay the tuition, she was required to alternate each year of medical study with a year of picking cotton. It took her seven years to get her degree and she graduated in 1897.

The next year Grier returned to Atlanta where she set up her practice. After just four years, Dr. Grier died and her medical practice closed.

Pinckney Stuffed Animal Drive forLawrence Memorial Hospital:

LMH is our biggest business partner. The LMH staff donate so many things for our kids: supplies, clothes, coffee, etc. Each year, Pinckneykids and families give back to the hospital in December through a stuffed animal andcrayons/coloring book drive. The hospital uses our donations for all kids who come or stay in the hospital. We are collecting brand new," tags still on" stuffed animals and/or new coloring books/crayons. We will continue collecting donations until Dec. 20.

Pinckney Canned Food Drive for Just Foods:

Our students have the opportunity to purchase “can goods” each Wednesday this month using the tickets they have earned for good behavior and hard work. Our staff has donated nonperishable foods for the project. We are so proud of our students for deciding to use their tickets to buy food to donate to Just Foods.

Thursday, Dec. 21—this is our last day before winter break; we will have morning opener with representatives from Just Foods, the Community Shelter and LMH to accept our donations. We will end the day with a winter sing along in the gym at 2:30 pm.Each grade level will be determining the times for their winter party and should communicate this to families. Please join us for morning opener, parties and the winter sing along if you are available!

Winter break will last from Friday, Dec. 22-January 3, students return to school on Thursday, Jan. 4
