£7.44 per hour + unsocial premium

We're looking for safe, professional, experienced drivers (with or without the PCV qualification) to join our staff bank. You’ll be driving passengers along routes to and from the Hospice at Kirklands House, Gogar as part of a seven day a week service. You’ll have previous professional driving experience giving you the ability to reach your destinations each day according to the timetable in a safe and efficient manner. On the staff bank you have no regular set hours but may work when shifts are available and when this fits in with your other commitments.

You'll need to be excellent at customer service – friendly, approachable and helpful to every passenger who gets on our vehicle (whether staff, volunteers or visitors). You'll also complete walk-round checks to ensure your vehicle is road-worthy, and help passengers as and when required. See job description for further details.

JOB DESCRIPTION

2. JOB PURPOSE

To drive a Hospice vehicle in a safe and professional manner, to a high standard, in order to convey Hospice staff, volunteers and visitors along a pre-determined route in accordance with agreed time schedules.
Shift Patterns: Flexible / Variable shifts
If working on the staff bank there is no regular commitment to set hours, but there is flexibility to work when you are available and to fit in with your other commitments.
3. DIMENSIONS
As driver of a Hospice vehicle, the post holder will perform his/her duties delivering high quality and safe transportation of Hospice staff, volunteers and visitors. The post holder works within a team of drivers to provide a service across seven days a week.

Volunteer Services manage all volunteer activity including recruitment, induction, orientation, training, motivation, support, supervision and retention, so that the volunteer workforce can purposefully support patients, relatives and friends and also add value to the work of staff and the overall environment of St. Columba’s Hospice

6. KEY RESULT AREAS

·  Drive allocated vehicle, as road traffic law dictates, in a manner appropriate to the conditions, and with due consideration for the safety of passengers and other road users
·  Carry out external & internal inspection of vehicle at start of each shift (using checklist) and report any damage or defects immediately ensuring that the vehicle is clean and fit for purpose.
·  Ensure that any in-vehicle equipment is safe and in good working order
·  Ensures that all passengers are delivered safely to the appropriate drop-off stops specified
·  Ensuring that passengers are secured in vehicle using seat belts/straps provided
·  To control passenger loading and ensure the legal capacity is not exceeded.
·  To pick up and set down passengers at pre-determined stops with due care for their safety as they board and alight the vehicle
·  To follow Hospice procedures in the event of breakdowns, accidents and emergencies
·  Ensure that all passengers are delivered/collected according to the timetable in force
·  Work closely with other drivers and other Volunteer Services staff and pass on information to them as and when required
·  Carry out external & internal vehicle cleaning duties, including the use of power washing machines
·  Complete and submit all documentation to comply with departmental requirements eg petrol receipts/log sheets
·  Ensures that any accidents, near misses or hazards are reported immediately to line manager using the relevant Health & Safety Accident & Incident Reporting Form.
·  To ensure the safety and comfort of passengers at all times
·  Maintain the First Aid Box located in the vehicle, checking the contents of the boxes monthly against the enclosed contents list. Inform the Volunteer Services office of any shortages
·  Ensure that the vehicle and equipment are kept clean, and the vehicle has sufficient fuel at all times
·  Act in accordance with the Hospice’s code of conduct being helpful, polite and courteous in manner at all times
·  To maintain a smart and tidy personal appearance and wear Hospice uniform, whilst on duty
·  Carry out any other reasonable duties when requested by Volunteer Services staff and/or the Volunteer Services Manager

Systems
·  Post holder completes manual records (log sheets) of passenger journeys, and is required to complete accident/incident report forms for any incidents, hazards etc.
·  Required to provide accurate oral information to Volunteer Services staff on transport service related matters

8. ASSIGNMENT AND REVIEW OF WORK

·  Workload will be determined by daily timetable and any other service requirements
·  Volunteer Services Manager monitors work performance according to work schedule, and carries out annual appraisal
9. DECISIONS AND JUDGEMENTS
·  Post holder is required to work mostly unsupervised due to nature of duties, i.e. being on road driving for majority of shift and away from ‘base’.
·  Post holder is required to use a degree of discretion when driving, however the post operates within strict operating procedures eg covering route, timetable, emergency or breakdown procedures etc which will inform any decision made. Any event occurring that is not covered by standard procedures will require the post holder to contact their line manager or the Volunteer Services office for assistance and advice.

·  Conveying passengers to pick up and drop off stops on time, in a safe and comfortable manner.
·  Taking action to minimise journey times and ensure punctuality
11. COMMUNICATIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS
Post holder communicates on a daily basis with Volunteer Services staff (regarding route, planning, vehicle, etc)
Post holder has direct patient contact with Hospice staff, volunteers and visitors, ensuring passengers are
conveyed in a comfortable and appropriate manner.
12. PHYSICAL, MENTAL, EMOTIONAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB
Physical Skills:
Physical skills – requirement to drive Hospice vehicles in safe and appropriate manner,
Dexterity skills such as safe use of equipment.
Physical Demands:
Required to drive Hospice vehicles for periods of time, with interruptions arising when required to stop at agreed pick-up/drop-off points
Mental Demands:
Mental demands – high level of concentration required at all times during driving duties to ensure safe and comfortable journey.
Workload is fairly predictable and is planned out in advance
Emotional Demands
Emotional demands – occasionally dealing with any difficult passengers. For example a passenger who has had to wait for some considerable time for transport to or from the HospiceH.

Essential:
·  A full, clean UK driving licence
·  Literate & numerate with a good general standard of education.
·  Significant driving experience with well developed driving skills
·  Must be literate in order to complete daily work sheets
·  Able to drive safely and adhere to road traffic signs.
·  Understanding of customer care.
·  Excellent communication skills & ability to deal with a range of people
·  Ability to work shift pattern up to five days out of seven. Ability to work weekends 1 in 3
Desirable:

CONDITIONS OF SERVICE

TITLE: Bank Driver

REPORTING TO: Volunteer Services Manager

LOCATION: Kirklands House, Gogarmuir Road, Edinburgh, EH12 9BZ

JOB STATUS: Fixed term for 1 year

SALARY: £7.44 per hour + unsocial hours premium

HOURS AND DAYS OF WORK: Flexible / Variable shifts (see shift rota attached for example shifts). Shift availability is not guaranteed, and there is no regular commitment.

If working on the staff bank there is flexibility to work unique shift hours to fit in with your other commitments.

PAYMENT OF SALARY: The successful candidate’s salary will be paid monthly direct into his/her bank/building society account and he/she will be required to open an account if such facility is not currently in operation

HOLIDAYS: For bank staff, holiday pay at the rate of 12.07% of the basic hourly rate, is paid in addition to basic pay for all hours worked

SMOKING POLICY: There is a ban on smoking in Hospice premises including vehicles

PRE-EMPLOYMENT CHECKS: All appointments are subject to verification of qualifications, medical assessment, and the receipt of satisfactory references. This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and therefore an Enhanced Criminal Records check via PVG Scheme membership will be required (Disclosure Scotland). All professional staff will be required to supply their relevant registration number, which will be verified with the appropriate professional body.
