WHERE THERE IS SIN #4

….GOD HAS PROVIDED A SACRIFICE

Where there is sin God is redefined.

Where there is sin God is offended

Where there is sin God must execute Judgment

Where there is sin God has provided a sacrifice.

A man that had a heart for God committed one of the most outrageous acts of sin in the Bible. King David commits adultery with a loyal soldier, has her husband killed, and loses a baby at birth. I cannot think of a greater guilt to live.

When we find ourselves in sin we must turn to God as David.

Not only is he an example of what sin does to good men but he is an example of how God forgives mans sin.

Let’s look into the heart of this man. In his prayer of repentance we can discover our own needs.

Psalm 51:1–2 (ESV)

1Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions.

2Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!

Psalm 51:7–11 (ESV)

7Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

8Let me hear joy and gladness;

let the bones that you have broken rejoice.

9Hide your face from my sins,

and blot out all my iniquities.

10Create in me a clean heart, O God,

and renew a right spirit within me.

11Cast me not away from your presence,

and take not your Holy Spirit from me.

There were basically 3 things that David requested.

1. Cover my sin.- “blot out my sin”

2. Cleanse me - “wash me with hyssop”

3. Create a clean heart in me

David knew he could not come to God unless his sin was dealt with. The remedy is where there is sin God has provided a sacrifice.

John 3:16

Matthew 26 28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. ESV

I. God provides a sacrifice that covers or conceals our

sin.

Blot out implies a comparison with human records that can be erased.

Romans 5:10 (ESV)

10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.

Reconciled in KJV is the word “atonement” which means “to cover”.

The implication is that God covers our sin so that our sin no longer separates us from Him.

Colossians 2 14He canceled the record of the charges against us and took itaway by nailing it to the cross.

He gives us more than forgiveness he erases the charges.

II. God provides a sacrifice that will cleanse us of

our sin.

Psalm 512Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!

7Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

Cleanse is drawn from the liturgical ceremonial law in which one might be purified for temple participation.

When David spoke of God’s cleansing him with hyssop, he was alluding to the use of hyssop at the religious ceremonies to sprinkle sacrificial blood on the altar. This represented the removal of sin through the shedding of blood (Heb. 9:22).

David is asking God for a miracle. He begs to be ‘cleansed with hyssop’ — as a leper is sprinkled with the blood of a sacrifice, using a bunch of hyssop (a common herb). This is a sign to the leper that he is now fully restored to health and can rejoin the community (Leviticus 14:1–9). David pleads that the bones of his soul, so shattered in shame, may be mended by forgiveness and dance for joy.[1]

1Thes. 5 23 Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. ESV

III. God provides a sacrifice that will create a clean heart.

Psa. 51 10Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.

Some may judge David harshly and forget that even in the N.T. church there are those that have sinned just as greatly yet they have been given a new heart.

1 Corinthians 6 9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Ephesians 5:25–28 (NLT)

25……just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her 26to make her holy and clean, washed by the cleansing of God’s word. 27He did this to present her to himself as a glorious church without a spot or wrinkle or any other blemish. Instead, she will be holy and without fault.

EPH. 4 24Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy. NLT

God has provided a sacrifice that reveals his heart for you.

God is not willing that any man be eternally lost.

2 Peter 3:9 (ESV)

9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.

John 3:16 For God so loved…..he gave his only begotten Son….that whosoever believes on Him …. Should not perish but have everlasting life.

God is not willing that any sin go unforgiven

Matthew 12:31 (ESV)

31Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.
