Exam 2: Monday, May 22

Final Exam: Wednesday, June 14

Homework – Each week, homework problems will be assigned for each chapter in the text. These problems will not be collected or graded, but it is highly recommended that you do them. They will be indicative of the types of questions on the exams. Each exam will have at least one problem directly from the homework.

Quizzes – There will be between 6-10 short quizzes given throughout the quarter. These quizzes are designed to keep you up to date on course material between exams. They may be individual or group quizzes. There will be no make-up quizzes, but you may drop your lowest quiz score.

Exams – There will be 2 exams and a final. There will be no make-up exams, unless you have extenuating circumstances that prevent you from taking the exam.

Group Presentations – The purpose of the group presentation is to give you an opportunity to explore a current problem in everyday life that relates to concepts covered in class. In groups of 3-4 people, you will present either a powerpoint presentation or a poster on your topic. All members of the group will receive the same grade, and all members must participate equally. More information will be given out during the quarter.

General Rules:

Attendance – I will not take attendance, but you are responsible for obtaining notes from a fellow classmate if you miss a lecture.

Late Work – All lab reports are due at the beginning of class. You will be penalized 2pts if you turn it in after the start of the hour and 2pts for each additional class period that it is late.

Cheating and Plagiarism – Cheating and plagiarism will not be tolerated. Any student caught cheating will receive a zero for that assignment.

LABORATORY

Lab in general – Please be prepared for lab and bring your lab notebook, calculator and goggles. For each lab you will complete a prelab assignment. You will not be allowed to start the lab until you have turned in your prelab. It is imperative that you treat all chemicals with respect. If you have any questions, please talk to me before you handle or dispose of chemicals. All labs will be done in pairs. You will be sharing a lab drawer with another person and you will both be responsible for its contents.

Lab notebooks – You will need to purchase a bound notebook. Spiral notebooks are not acceptable. Everything that you do in lab should be recorded in your lab notebook at the time the experiment is performed. Someone should be able to replicate the experiment solely from your laboratory notebook. Please read “How to write a laboratory notebook” on the website.
Prelabs - A prelab will consist of: 1) Purpose of the experiment. 2) A brief summary of the experiment in your own words. Do NOT copy directly from the text. 3) A sketch of the apparatus being used (if any) 4) Waste disposal protocol. 5) Prelab questions. Prelab questions will be given during the lab lecture. Prelabs should be in your notebook and a copy of it must be turned in before the start of the lab. You will not be allowed to start the lab unless you have completed the prelab.
Postlab reports – The post lab report guide for each lab will be posted on the website. Lab reports are due 1 week from the completion of the lab.

Miscellaneous

You cannot miss an exam or make up a lab. If you miss a lab you will receive a 0. You can drop your lowest lab score. If you have extenuating circumstances that prevent you from taking an exam, please let me know as soon as possible your situation.
