The Clean Air Coalition of BC (CAC), which is comprised of the B.C. Lung Association and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of B.C. & Yukon, exists to raise public awareness about the serious health risks of exposure to second-hand smoke and to advocate for smoke-free environments for workers, the public and those experiencing second-hand smoke infiltrating their homes from neighboring units in Multi-Unit Dwellings.

Smoke-Free Housing Canada is a national website dedicated to educating landlords, tenants and condominium owners on the issue of second-hand smoke in multi-unit dwellings. The Canadian Smoke-Free Housing Coalition helps to maintain and provide guidance on this site.

Program Details

The OTN is a provincial interagency network consisting of the Canadian Cancer Society, Ontario Division (CCS), the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario (HSFO) and the The Lung Association (TLA). The network is funded by the Ministry of Health Promotion and supported in-kind by CCS, HSFO, TLA and the Ontario Campaign for Action on Tobacco (OCAT).

Since its inception in 2000, the OTN has developed public education campaigns for National Non-Smoking Week, World No Tobacco Day, and issue specific campaigns e.g. Out of Sight-Out of Mind, SHS in Multi-Unit Dwellings, enabling local tobacco-free coalitions to advocate around tobacco control issues in their communities.

Program Description/Services: The Tobacco Control Program funds local health departments and community based organizations to advocate for social norms that create a tobacco-free environment, of which smoke-free multi-unit housing is a major priority. The smoke-free Multi-unit Housing Campaign provides training and technical assistance, policy guidance, educational materials, evaluation and surveillance, media, and community education for funded programs to facilitate adopting voluntary and mandatory smoke-free multi-unit housing policies in market rate and low income housing and condominiums.
