Challenges from Steering Group members

  • MG: Working with other networks – where are the potential overlaps / synergies?
  • MG: Measuring effectiveness and impact – need membership to endorse key messages, especially now that we are more accountable through this democratically elected Board. How has GNDR made an impact to the DRR sector?
  • MG: Prioritisation of agendas to keep interest, and maintain global balance.
  • BH: new Board to provide strong leadership and direction
  • BH: Need to establish good relationship with RDCs, important relationship between governance and management.
  • BH: how can we reach out to climate and development initiatives?
  • BH: how do we link with other sectors so that we are not isolated to develop a true local agenda?
  • BH: how can we provide support to members; capacity building and knowledge management?
  • HS: DRR is being neglected by Governments, challenging to secure funding, and we are heading towards a weak, non-binding, international framework (HFA2). We should focus on climate resources available.
  • HS: Need to understand who we are and what we want to be. What is our role in the DRR landscape, to ensure we are not duplicating.
  • HS: Need to work more closely with the media to promote DRR.
  • RC: Pacific a different region, lack of strong NGO networks – opposite to other regions such as Asia.
  • RC: Need to make the role of GNDR more known in the Pacific region

Strategy and Action

  • BH: reflection on previous strategy; the consultation with membership and Board refining worked well, especially to ensure ownership.
  • TG: Looking at the previous strategy, what have we learnt, what have we actually done? What can GNDR uniquely contribute?
  • TG: Invitation to become specifically involved in this consultation process.
  • TG: confirmation that the strategy will be adopted by the membership at the Global Summit
  • FK: By March it must be very clear what we want to be. Should have an alternative paper / suggestions for HFA2. ActionAid planning an event: ’50 days to Sendai’ on their website for external consultation.
  • NS: Need continuity, must establish contacts with other networks. Need to clarify the expectation of the members. Challenge to make DRR more engaging.
  • MM: How do we link RDC position with Board members? Critical to have finances in order to keep the secretariat functioning.
  • AK: Important to maintain regional links, to keep visibility of the network.
  • NT: As a network can we enable members to do more campaigning to enforce policy change?
  • KBP: Can GNDR be more active on the ground?
  • HS: Challenge to put together a strategy that incorporates all that has been discussed. Better to be a relevant institution, than just increase the membership. Try to align this with the relevant funding streams.
  • BH: From our practice there is much learning to be done which informs our policy. We are not just a policy network, more a combination of practice informed policy.
  • MG: GNDR needs to understand our added value to help to combat these challenges.
  • MO: At the end of 2015 we will need to take stock. At the moment we are disappointed at current draft of HFA2, it does not reflect the points that GNDR has tried to advocate on behalf of civil society.
  • HS: Priorities have to be at the national level. Climate and SDGs agreement will not be ambitious.
  • EA: GNDR must present local reality at Sendai to bring the communities’ voices forward. We should show the leadership that civil society holds and link communities into monitoring and implementation of HFA2 at local level.
