The first graders will learn about the life cycle of pumpkins, the weight and buoyancy of pumpkins, and they will do many reading activities related to pumpkins. Each first grade student will decorate a pumpkin to go along with his/her classroom theme. SECOND GRADE
2nd grade will have Pajama Day tomorrow – Thursday, October 22nd.

Second graders are finishing up Topic (Unit) 2 this week in Math. We've been studying equal groups. Students have learned vocabulary words such as row, column, and array. The Topic will end with a unit test later this week. Please be on the look out for the Topic 3 parent letter that will come home at the end of this week or early next week. The letter will give you background on Topic (Unit) 3, so that you are prepared to be involved in your second grader's math learning.

ALSO...Our field trip to Media Borough is this Friday. The temperature for our morning walking tour looks like it will be in the 40s, so please dress your second grader appropriately. They will spend the majority of their time outside putting their map skills to good use and identifying features of a community. We will return to school in time for lunch, so your normal lunch routine will work fine on Friday. If you will be a chaperone, please arrive at 9:00am, and be sure your clearances have been received and accepted by the district office.

THIRD GRADE
Third graders were treated to a special lesson on Google Classroom presented by Mr. Evan O'Neill, Rose Tree Media's Technology Coach. All of our students learned how to how to log in to Google classroom and access an assignment posted on a Google document. Students typed answers to the question, "What is your favorite way to use computers?" Mr. O'Neill also showed students how to select clip art to accompany their responses and how to submit their assignment when it was completed. It was a very exciting afternoon of learning for our third graders. Students are looking forward to completing more assignments in Google classroom in the coming months!
FOURTH GRADE
Fourth graders are ready to travel throughout the Delaware County by using our "Passport to History!" The Delaware County Historical Society sponsors this program, which allows fourth graders to visit historical sites in the area for free. We will receive our first stamp when we visit the Tyler Arboretum. Certificates and prizes are awarded to children who have at least five stamps in their Passport in June. Information is coming home today!

FIFTH GRADE

As we move into the third week of October, the 5th grade students continue to develop their talents as writers of narratives in Writer’s Workshop, paying particular attention to the art of writing from within the story rather than writing summaries. Last week and this week, students are publishing and celebrating one of their works of writing. In Reader’s Workshop, Glenwood’s 5th grade students continue to develop a deeper understanding of how to best read works of fiction. In particular, 5th grade students are paying careful attention to the importance of character development in works of fiction. In social studies, the 5th grade continues to look at the first inhabitants of North America. In Science, the 5th grade continues to use the scientific method in our study of weather. In grammar, students are focusing attention on the art of writing a good sentence and also how to best use common and proper nouns in writing.
