Universitas 21 Fellowships 2017-2018

Background and Objectives

The University of Hong Kong is one of the founding members of Universitas 21. This international association was conceived by a group of broad-based and research-intensive universities in Australia. It aims to enrich intellectual discourse, as well as the educational, research and scholarly functions of member institutions. The objective is to strengthen the capacity of member institutions to operate internationally and to enhance their recognition and standing world-wide as they launch into the 21st century. Attached at Annex I is a list of the current members, details of which can be viewed at http://www.universitas21.com/.

2. The initial programme agreed upon at the inaugural Universitas 21 Conference included the development of a Universitas 21 Fellowship Programme, for the purposes of promoting and popularizing best practices, by arranging each year for each of the Universitas 21 members to make available a number of teachers to visit other Universitas 21 campuses.

3. The Senate has approved that the Universitas 21 Fellowships be established in this University to enable up to 3 teachers to visit other Universitas 21 campuses for a 2-month period to conduct teaching and/or research projects for the purpose of academic exchange and/or professional development; thereby to create closer links with their colleagues at fellow institutions. The major criterion in making the award is the merit of the project which the applicant intends to conduct during his/her visit to other Universitas 21 institutions. Special consideration will be given to outstanding teachers who have demonstrated over a sustained period the capacity to combine distinguished scholarship with well-developed teaching skills, and who have the ability to inspire, motivate and enthuse students.

Award

4. Each Fellow will be awarded a sum of HK$50,000 to be spent on travel and related scholarly activities. Fellows will be paid their usual salary (and a cash allowance in the case of teachers on Terms of Service I (Clinical Medical Staff)) for the duration of their visit. Absence from the University for the period of the visit will be treated as absence on attachment overseas, and will not be detrimental to the Fellow’s leave entitlements.

Application Procedures

5. Applicants are expected to liaise with the receiving institution beforehand, following which they should submit a proposal on the activities to be undertaken during their visit, a detailed curriculum vitae, (and if the proposal is to share teaching expertise, a teaching portfolio which contains evidence of their achievements in teaching and curriculum development), and request the Head and the Dean to recommend in confidence to the Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor.

6. Applications will be considered by the Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor and processed by the Human Resource Section of the Registry. Criteria for assessment will be based on the merit of the proposal, and where appropriate, teaching quality as evidenced by the applicant’s submissions, and comments from the Head and the Dean.

7. The Fellowships are open to all full-time Teachers. Given the expectation that the Fellows should continue to contribute to the improvement of teaching after their return to Hong Kong, if the Fellow leaves the University within one year of the conclusion of the Fellowship, either by resignation, or by declining an offer of a further appointment, he/she shall be required to repay all or part of the fellowship awarded unless given a specific waiver from this requirement by the Council.

Timeframe

8. Applications should be submitted by February 1, 2017, and selection of applicants will take place in February 2017. Results will be announced in late February or early March, in order that the Fellows may take up the offer in the following academic year.
