Frequently Asked Questions
Glass collection changes – new blue bin
Why am I having another bin?
We have received feedback from many residents that they don’t participate in our glass recycling scheme because of the difficulty in handling the blue boxes. We have taken comments into consideration and hope, by using a bin, more people will recycle their glass.
Why is glass collected separately in Ashfield?
By providing a separate collection of glass bottles and jars, we are diverting waste away from landfill and sending it for recycling. Ashfield recyclesaround 2500 tonnes of glass annually.
Will the changes cost me anything?
There will be no charge or costs to residents for the new bin and service.
What will my new bin look like?
The new bin will have a dark grey body, similar to existing bins, and a blue lid.
How big will the new bin be?
The new bin will have a capacity of 140L - this is more than 3 times the capacity of the blue boxes.
What will the collection frequency be?
The collection frequency of the new bin will be changed from 4 weeks to every 8 weeks because of the extra capacity in the bin.
How will I know what my collection days will be?
A collection calendar will be sent to all households in early September. Please keep it safe as it will show your bin collection days over the Christmas and New Year period.
What can I put in the new glass bin?
You can dispose of glass bottles and jars only. Unfortunately, the glass processors who we deliver your glass to are unable to process any other type of glass. This means we are unable to accept glass such as; car windscreens, sheet glass, glass ornaments, glass vessels, mirrors, glass from furniture etc.
What happens if I put something wrong in the new bin?
If the bin contains items that we cannot recycle along with the glass, the bin will not be emptied and a hanger will be left on the bin.
What will happen to my blue box?
We do not intend to remove the blue boxes. Please use them for your own purposes. We have some ideas for their use at the links below:
If I prefer not to have a new bin, can I still use the blue box to dispose of my glass bottles and jars?
No, we will no longer be emptying blue boxes. We will only empty bins which reduces the risk of injury to residents and the collection crew.
If I prefer not to have a new bin, what do I do with my bottles and jars?
All of your glass bottles and jars will have to be disposed of in your red lidded general waste bin. By using your blue bin, you will be diverting waste from your red lidded bin, therefore creating additional capacity and helping the environment.
