ARNOLD CENTER, INC

EMPLOYEE MONTHLY MEETING

Date: July 31, 2017

I.  FOLLOW UP ON ACTION ITEMS:

Nothing at this time.

II.  NEW BUSINESS:

During the month of July, we discussed confrontation avoidance as the topic of our in-service. We discussed methods for reducing the potential for confrontation in the workplace. If you are speaking with an individual and they are becoming upset, make sure that you remain calm. Don’t raise your voice and don’t argue with the person. If you are standing, sit and encourage the person to sit with you. Repeat back what they are saying so they know you are listening and understand. “What I hearing you saying is that you’re upset because you weren’t able to sit by your friend at lunch.” If the individual is becoming increasingly upset, seek assistance from a staff person to help deescalate the situation. Remember that yelling and/or acting in an intimidating matter will only make the situation worse.

III.  ACCESSIBILITY:

Reminded employees the meaning of accessibility; no concerns noted in this area.

  1. POLICY & PROCEDURE: Gift Giving & Gratuities

It is natural to want to give a gift to someone for doing a good deed or for just being your friend. However, please remember that it is against agency policy for the staff of Arnold Center to accept purchased gifts from its participants. Rather than buying a present to show your appreciation, consider a personal thank you or a card expressing your appreciation. Homemade gifts, that have no retail value, are acceptable and encouraged provided they are given on an infrequent basis.

It is our desire to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants involved in our services. Some participants may have allergies, restrictions from doctors and/or guardians, etc., that would prohibit the giving of some kinds of gifts. Each participant’s Service Coordinator would be knowledgeable about any restrictions or allergies and would be able to determine if the exchange should take place. Therefore, please refrain from receiving or giving gifts without the knowledge of your Service Coordinator. If you have questions concerning this policy, please see your Service Coordinator.

V.  SAFETY:

Discussed safety and asked if there were any concerns; none noted.

VI.  SPOTLIGHT:

Tim D. was selected as July’s Employee of the Month due to his enthusiasm, desire to be a good friend to others, and willingness to help out when a janitorial shift requires coverage.

VII.  REVIEW OF NEWSLETTERS (HAPPENINGS, LINK)

None to review at this time.

VIII.  SELF ADVOCACY:

We discussed the Gift Giving policy as several employees like sharing and/or giving to others. I reminded all that the policy simply requests that you first speak with your Service Coordinator before sharing with others. Many of our co-

workers have allergies which aren’t and shouldn’t be known to all. For the safety of all participants, please ask first.

IX.  COMMUNITY EMPLOMENT:

We have openings in late afternoon/early evening janitorial crews. Additionally,

we need people to help with recycling duties and window washing. If you are

interested, please speak with Jennifer Bell

X.  WAGE AND PIECE RATE:

Wiping dust covers earns 0.02771 per piece; in order to earn $1.00, employees must complete thirty-six caps.
