GIS Mission – Crime Stopper

Mission briefing…..

Welcome to Bridgefordshire Constabulary.

Our aim is to protect the citizens of Bridgefordshire from the threat of crime.

Your GIS skills are going to be very valuable to us.

When a crime is reported, we use a GIS to record:

• the type of crime

• when it happened

• where it happened

We then use the GIS to identify crime patterns and to pinpoint the areas at greatest risk of crime. This allows us to allocate police resources more effectively by targeting the areas where they are most needed.

Crime surveys suggest that many people are concerned about the level of crime in south-east Melchester.

This area is patrolled by officers from 5 separate police divisions.

We need to decide which 3 divisions are most deserving of extra support.

Use your GIS to investigate crime patterns in south-east Melchester.

Score each of the 5 divisions on the factors listed below:

• freedom from street robbery

• freedom from burglary

• freedom from car crime

• share of existing police resources

Then use your scores to decide which 3 divisions are most in need.

Report back to me with your choices.

Good luck.
