EDUCATION COMMITTEE MEETING
Tuesday, February 6, 2018 Forest Lake Presbyterian Church
Attendees: Mary McIntosh, Judy Timmons, Valerie Marcil, Mary Virginia Tynan, Tameria M. Warren, Trish Jerman, Ann Yancey, Jan Blach, Ann Palyok
- Approval of Minutes-The minutes of the January, 2018 meeting of the GCWA Education Committee meeting and the February agenda were approved with the following changes
Jan Hill should be Jane Hill
Second reference to GWCA (GWA) should be corrected.
- Old Business
- Educational Demonstration at A.C. Moore Elementary School- Ann reported that the event went well and that we will probably be asked back in the future. She indicated that we will need more volunteers at future events. She also indicated that the Enviroscape needs freshening and that she has cleaned it well. The Fish Story activity also went well and Judy Timmons has written lesson plans for both activities for future use. Ann will bring both activities and lesson plans to the next meeting.
- Ann informed the committee of the plans for the Library Lecture Series event with Dr. Drew Lanham on February 15, 2018 at 6:30 at the main branch of the Richland Public Library. The title of his presentation is “Coloring the Conservation Conversation”. The Inn at Carolina is providing lodging for Dr. Lanham. Light refreshments will be provided and Judy Timmons and Valerie Marcil will work registration at the event. Ann Palyok will introduce the speaker. There will be membership brochures at the registration table and guests will be able to join at the event. Registration process was discussed. The Wine for Water event will be announced during the evening and there was discussion regarding following up with guests who are not members. There will be no walk but there will be a workshop opportunity in the afternoon.
- There was discussion of the need for signs to be displayed during our clean-up events. Valerie volunteered to contact Fast Signs to see about getting these made. This is the company that makes the trash can signs.
- Discussion of the trash cans on Decker and whether they have been checked to see if they are being used. Discussion of having trash cans not located at bus stops and who would empty them.
New Business
- Judy Timmons introduced new member Mary Virginia Tynan.
- The next meeting will be March 13 at Forest Lake Presbyterian Church
