GI Bill Program Basic Eligibility Requirements

Chapter 33 (Post 9/11 GI Bill)

  • Served on active duty after September 10, 2001 for at least 90 days aggregate or served on active duty at least 30 days after September 10, 2001 and were discharged with a service connected disability
  • Received an Honorable Discharge
  • To be eligible for a transfer of the benefit, you must be a spouse or child of a servicemember eligible for Post 9/11 (You must also have a DoD approved transfer of entitlement while the service member was on active duty)

Chapter 30 (Montgomery GI Bill-Active Duty)

  • Served on regular active duty after June 30, 1985
  • Elected to make 12 monthly contributions of $100 from your military pay or converted from another GI Bill program such as VEAP or the Vietnam Era GI Bill
  • Received an Honorable Discharge
  • Completed High School or GED

Chapter 35 (Survivors & Dependants Assistance, DEA)

You must be the son, daughter, or spouse of:

  • A veteran who died or is permanently and totally disabled as the result of a service-connected disability
  • A veteran who died from any cause while such permanent and total service-connected disability was in existence
  • A servicemember missing in action or captured in line of duty by a hostile force
  • A servicemember forcibly detained or interned in line of duty by a foreign government or power
  • A servicemember who is hospitalized or receiving outpatient treatment for a service connected permanent and total disability and is likely to be discharged for that disability

Chapter 32 (Veterans Educational Assistance Program)

  • Entered active duty service for the first time between January 1, 1977 and June 30, 1985
  • Voluntarily contributed up to $2700 into program
  • Completed the first period of service
  • Discharged or released from service under conditions other than dishonorable

Chapter 1606 (Montgomery GI Bill-Selected Reserve)

  • Have a six-year obligation to serve in the Selected Reserve signed after June 30, 1985
  • Complete your initial active duty for training (IADT)
  • Remain in good standing while serving in an active Selected Reserve unit or were discharged from Selected Reserve service due to a disability not caused by misconduct

Chapter 1607 (Reserve Educational Assistance Program)

  • Reserve Components (National Guard or Reserves)
  • Activated for at least 90 days after September 11, 2001

Post 9/11 Fry (Post 9/11 GI Bill Fry Scholarship, Chapter 33)

  • Child or servicemember who died in the line of duty after 9/10/01

Benefits Checklist

Chapter 33 Post 9/11 GI Bill:

  • Determine Eligibility
  • Go to and click on “Apply for Benefits” then Apply Online (VONAPP) and fill out form VA FORM 22-1990
  • If found eligible, the VA will send you a Certificate of Eligibility via mail
  • Apply for admissions at UCCS
  • Once you are accepted to UCCS, bring the Certificate of Eligibility to the UCCS Office of Veteran and Military Student Affairs. This only needs to be done once unless your percentage changes.
  • Once you are registered for classes and have a firm schedule, fill out a course load worksheet. These can be found in the OVMSA, Main Hall 106. This form is also on our website. (This must be done every semester you want benefits!)
  • If you are receiving resident (in-state) tuition rates, you must authorize the College Opportunity Fund.
  • After all of your information has been processed, you will receive your benefits. This may take 2-8 weeks depending on the VA’s backlog.
  • Tuition and fees payments will go directly to UCCS.
  • A book stipend will be paid to the account on record for the student upon VA verification at $41.67 per unit verified.
  • BAH will be paid to the account on record for the student on the first of the month. Payment will be made for the previous month.
  • Tuition, fees, the book stipend, and BAH will be paid based on your percentage. Anything not paid by the VA, will be billed to you by UCCS.

Chapter 30 Montgomery GI Bill:

  • Determine Eligibility
  • Go to and click on “Apply for Benefits” then Apply Online (VONAPP) and fill out form VA FORM 22-1990
  • If found eligible, the VA will send you a Certificate of Eligibility via mail
  • Apply for admissions at UCCS
  • Once you are accepted to UCCS, bring the Certificate of Eligibility to the UCCS Office of Veteran and Military Student Affairs. This only needs to be done once.
  • Once you are registered for classes and have a firm schedule, fill out a course load worksheet. These can be found in the OVMSA, Main Hall 106. This form is also on our website. (This must be done every semester you want benefits!)

Chapter 35 Dependent Educational Assistance:

  • Determine Eligibility
  • Go to and click on “Apply for Benefits” then Apply Online (VONAPP) and fill out form VA FORM 22-5490
  • If found eligible, the VA will send you a Certificate of Eligibility via mail
  • Apply for admissions at UCCS
  • Once you are accepted to UCCS, bring the Certificate of Eligibility to the UCCS Office of Veteran and Military Student Affairs. This only needs to be done once.
  • Once you are registered for classes and have a firm schedule, fill out a course load worksheet. These can be found in the OVMSA, Main Hall 106. This form is also on our website. (This must be done every semester you want benefits!)

Chapter 1606 Montgomery GI Bill – Reserves or 1607 REAP:

  • Determine Eligibility
  • Go to and click on “Apply for Benefits” then Apply Online (VONAPP) and fill out form VA FORM 22-1990
  • Attain a Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE) from the education officer at your unit.
  • Once you are registered for classes and have a firm schedule, fill out a course load worksheet. These can be found in the OVMSA, Main Hall 106. This form is also on our website. (This must be done every semester you want benefits!)
  • Verify benefits monthly via WAVE (link at or by calling 1 (800) 442-4551
  • Benefits are paid to the account on record monthly on the 1st.
