GHSGT Review (11th and 12th graders)

Covering 30/60/90 triangles, 45/45/90 triangles, trigonometric functions and application

Lesson # 2 – “The Right Stuff” The “right Brothers” exploration of special right triangles – 45/45/90 triangles

Learning objectives: GPS MM2G1b

1.  Students will be able to identify, use, and determine the lengths of

45/45/90 triangles

2.  Students will analyze the square and the resulting applications of the 45/45/90 triangle

Essential Question: “How do I use a 45/45/90 triangles to solve problems?

Day One:

Warm-Up : 2 problem review of 30/60/90 triangles

The Table: Work with a partner

Using prior knowledge of Pythagorian Theorem to fill out a table leading to the

Discovery of the 45/45/90 triangle ratios

Discussion and Teaching Moments: classroom discussion about student’s conclusions regarding the table. Discuss the ratios that were discovered.

Graphic Organizer with the discovered ratios

TOTD: 2 problems using the new 45/45/90 ratios

Day Two:

Real World Baseball Problem: Working again with partner students work on “Play Ball”

A task involving the baseball diamond leading to the discovery that a square can be

Divided evenly into two 45/45/90 triangles.

Discussion and teaching Moments: brief discussion of the task, “Play Ball”

Practice: Page with 45/45/90 triangles – solving for the missing sides

Artwork: Begin work on the “Spiral of Right Triangles”

Day Three:

Activator: a collection of 45/45/90 and 30/60/90 triangle ratio problems (mixed)

Application Problems: Groups of 3-4 students will work together to solve

45/45/90 triangle application problems. They will post their results.

Window Shopping: Each group will rotate through the room and read the other problems.

If they think the work is fantastic they will write an “!” on it.

If they don’t understand something they will put a “?” on it.

Class Discussion: After each group has “toured” the room the class will discuss

The parts of the problems that they did not understand
