Drawing Review
Gesture Drawing- (similar to sketching) capturing the essence of your
subject in the quickest and most "economical" way (especially effective
in capturing people and animals)
Line Gesture- quick drawings that use sketchy lines to capture the essence of the subject
Mass Gesture- a drawing technique used to make broad marks creating mass rather than line. Emphasizes the solid nature of that object by using the flat side of a piece of charcoal
Scribble Gesture- a method of drawing an object or person, which emphasizes the solid nature of that object by using lots of lines (scribble) to fill in the spaces
Thumbnail Sketches- small, quick drawings which generally list items or concepts to be used for a formal project
Five Minute Burn- a drawing which captures any and all details of an object and its surrounding environment in a short amount of time
Grid- Used to transfer a small image to a larger paper by using a checkerboard pattern to re-copy one section of the image at a time.
Negative Space- The area in and around the solid part of an object.
Contour Line Drawing- a drawing of an object or objects which emphasizes the edges of the object
Still Life- a collection of objects assembled for the purpose of drawing or painting
Value- In art the darkness or lightness of tones or colors; white is the lightest or highest; black is the darkest or lowest
Grey Scale- A series of tones ranging from black to white
Smudging- rubbing the pencil or charcoal to produce a smooth transition between different shades of grey
Hatching- a method for adding shadow to a rendered object by using small areas of parallel lines
Stipple- a method for adding shadow to a rendered object by using dots
Highlight- the brightest spot from a direct light source on a curved surface.
Local tone: The actual grey value of the object in normal light
Reflected Light- on an object cast partially in shadow, the area of light that appears as a result of an indirect light source
Crest of Shadow- the darkest section of shadow on a curved surface.
Cast Shadow- a surface darkened by an object obstructing the source of light.
Surrealism- taking subject matter from a realistic perspective and adding elements of imagination and fantasy
Linear Perspective- all lines that are parallel and receding (going away) go to a
vanishing point
Horizon Line- The level of your eyes relative to the distant line where the sky meets the earth.
Atmospheric Perspective- Objects appear more faded the farther away they are.
Composition- Arrangement of forms in an artwork using the following guidelines:
- Balance
- Overlapping
- Diagonals
- Contact with edges
- Focal Point
Body and face proportions are as follows:
-The human body is 7 heads tall
-The top of the legs is the midpoint of the body.
-Wrists are at the midpoint of the body.
-Fingertips go to the middle of the thigh.
-The foot is as long as the forearm.
-Span equals height.
-The hand is as big as the face.
-Eyes are at the middle of the face.
-5 eyes across the face.
-¾ iris visible in a turtle-shaped eye
-Eyebrows are like dominoes falling over.
-Eyelashes go to a vanishing point near the bottom of the iris.
-The bottom of the nose is half way between the eyebrow and the chin.
-The nose is formed by the letters “ UCY”
-The bottom of the lips is halfway between the nose and the chin.
-The upper lip is thinner and darker than the lower lip
-The ears align with the eyes and the bottom of the nose.
-Hair is drawn by shading areas in between groupings of hair, not drawing hair.
