The Geometry Honors course develops geometric knowledge that can be used to solve a variety of mathematical and real-world problems. The content will include, but is not limited to the following:

Terminology and fundamental properties of geometry

Terminology transferred from Algebra including ratios, proportions, distance formula, slope, linear graphing and midpoint.

Logical reasoning, constructions andproof-writing

Classifying and measuring of plane and solid figures, including perimeter, area, surface area, volume and applications of the Pythagorean Theorem

Exploration and application of geometric relationships including parallelism, perpendicularity, congruence, and similarity

Symmetry and transformations, including flips, reflections, rotations, slides and dilations

Circle properties and applications of tangents, arcs, central angles, inscribed angles and chords

Expectations: (PARENTS make sure to read)

Freshmen have many adjustments when they move onto high school. Honors students in particular have challenges they have never had previously. Geometry is a whole new language with new vocabulary words and a new way to look at the world around us. Honors courses in high school definitely introduce the students to a more rigorous study of mathematics and set high expectations which will carry over to their future courses in high school and college. Starting with the first chapter students will learn basic stepping stones to understanding geometry concepts butstudents will need to study the new vocabulary and concepts. Many of the honors students have never had to study their math in the past but if they do not study from the beginning this year they will eventually become lost. I teachthem organizational skills and strategies to help learn the material but they will have to take the initiative to complete all their work and to study for tests to be successful. LHS has earned some of the highest Geometry scores in the county for two years and the expectation is we will have the highest scoresthis year.

EXTRA HELP: I am available for help after school. Students will be asked to stay after if grades are below average. A letter will be sent home and a phone call will be made for those students who will be asked to stay after for tutoring.

Absences/Make-Up Work: Policies required by state and county laws will be followed. See student handbook. It is the student’s responsibility to find out the work missed after an excused absence. If the absence is unexcused, the work missed will be scored as zero. Daily assignments and dates assigned can be found in the Assignment Binderon my desk. Being present every day is the best way to be successful.

Cheating: Be proud of your work. Cheating will result in a zero on that work.

Detentions/Referrals: Each class will create a social contract. If student’s conduct is in opposition to the social contract, a thirty minute detention will be assigned. Homework detention will be given if a student misses two assignments in one week. Detentions must be served after school on the following Tuesday or Thursday.

Extra Credit: The prompt return of a Geometry progress report (within 2 days) will be an extra quiz grade of 100. This is an opportunity to raise their quiz average to help their overall grade. Extra credit is not allowed in Math classes except for specific pre-determined points towards quizzes or tests and students will have opportunities to earn these points throughout the year.

Materials: Students must bring textbook, binder, calculator, notebook paper, and pencil daily. {I will try to have a classroom set of textbooks available so students can leave their copy of the text book at home.}Homework must have all work shown and be handed in on time to receive credit. Due dates are always on the board and usually in esembler.

Restroom Passes:Students are expected to take care of personal needs between classes. .

Tardies: Doors will be locked when the tardy bell rings. If students are late, they must go to the Tardy Office to get a pass to enter the room. A warning will be given for the 1st offense, a phone call home will be made on the 2nd offense, and a detention will be given after the 3rd offense. Upon the 4th offense (automatically monitored), a referral/Loss of Privilege Lunch will be given.

Dress Cody Policy: If students enter class wearing clothes that are inappropriate, they will be sent directly to their Grade Level Office to change. 1st violation = Parent Call/ Change/Warning. 2nd violation = Parent Meeting/Change/Extra-curricular LOP 5 days/ Wednesday administrative detention. 3rd violation = Parent Call/Letter/ Change/

Extra-curricular LOP 30 days/1 Day ISS. 4th or Subsequent Violation = Parent Call/ Letter/ Change/Extra-curricular LOP 30 days/3 days ISS. (If no change available = ISS for the rest of the day).
