Course Overview

The study of Geometry includes math vocabulary, organization of proofs, points, lines, planes and angles, parallel lines and planes, transformations and congruence, congruent triangles, similar polygons, right triangles, circles, areas of plane and solid figures, volumes and surface areas of solids, using formulas in solving problems, visualizing geometric situations, and using geometric ideas in real situations.

The objective of this course is to provide the student with the requisite foundation for the study of advanced algebra and trigonometry.

Suggested Materials

Three ring binder or spiral bound notebook

Paper - standard 8 1/2 x 11 inches, ruler, protractor, compass

Pencils - all work must be done in pencil

Textbook –Discovery Geometry 4th Edition-kept free from marks

Scientific Calculator: A scientific calculator will be sufficient for most assignments in this course. The student is responsible to have his/her own calculator for homework.

Classroom Rules

1-Be on time and prepare for the lesson.

2-Be respectful to others.

3-Do not sleep in class. Failure to stay awake will result in 10 points off your class-work/homework grade.

4-There will be not drinking, eating, or chewing gum in class.

5-Hats, radios, CD players, cells, etc, are not permitted during instruction.

6- Students will not leave their seat until the conclusion of the period. The teacher will dismiss the class and not the bell.

Grading Criteria:

Homework/Class-work: All assignments are to be completed on time. No credit will be given for incomplete work or work submitted after due dates.

Quizzes: Quizzes will be issued routinely (usually announced, but not limited to).

  1. Test: Full period tests will be announced in advance and given at appropriate intervals during the grading period. They will be graded numerically with percentage scores and these scores will be averaged at the end of each grading period. Exam will be equal to 40% of your grade.
  2. Quizzeswill be similarly scored and will be equal to 30 % of your grade. Quizzes may or may not be announced in advance.
  3. Class participation 5%
  4. Class-work/Homework will be counted as 25% of your grade. (Unfinished class work or out of task can affect student’s grade. No late homework will be accepted).)

4. Your final grade, at the conclusion of 36 weeks, will reflect an average of 4 9-weeks grades (20% each), a mid-term grade, and a final (10% each).

Student’s 9-weeks grade will be determined as follows:

A= 90-100

B= 80-89

C= 70-79

D= 60-69

F= 59 and below

5-Beepers, hats, radios, CD players, cells, etc, are not permitted in the classroom. If you bring any of these items to class, and I see them, they will be taken away and delivered to the proper authorities.

These rules are simple enough for students to follow and will teach them the basic guidelines that they will carry with them throughout their lives. The student is expected to come prepared to class with appropriate class materials and a willingness to learn. The students are expected to behave respectfully to the teacher and to other students. Furthermore, the student is expected to accept the consequences of misbehavior.

Class Absences

1.-Excused Absences: When you are absent for any reason, you must show your admit on your return to class. If your absence is excused then you have the responsibility of finding out what work you missed and then making it up. If you miss a test or quiz you must make it up within three days on your return to school. This arrangement can be modify only with my prior approval. Excessive absences, even if excused, may adversely affect your grades.

2. - If your absence is not excused then you will receive a zero for the day’s work and you will not be permitted to make up missed work or test.
