Unit 1: Introduction, The Earth / Mapping (10 pts)
1. Define and describe two observations / activities of each of the following sciences.

2. Describe six features of topographic maps. Describe how you would determine, based upon topographic features, which trail (given a choice of three) would be easiest to go up a mountain.
Unit 2: Minerals(10 pts)
3. Describe and give one example of each of the three general classes of minerals.
4. Describe four characteristics of minerals that can be used to identify minerals.(
Unit 3: Igneous Rocks(10 pts)
5. Describe appearance and formation and give two examples of the two types of igneous rocks.
Unit 4: Sedimentary and Metamorphic Rocks(10 pts)
6. Describe appearance and formation and give two examples of the two types of sedimentary rocks.
7. Describe appearance and formation and give two examples of the two types of metamorphic rocks.
Unit 5: Mass Movements, Wind, and Glaciers(10 pts)
8. Describe factors that effect mass movements. Describe three examples of mass movements.
9. Describe how glaciers form and how they modify the landscape.
Unit 6: River Erosion(10 pts)
10. Describe how a river forms a canyon. Begin your discussion with a “youthful” river system and then describe what happens to the river and valley as the river system “matures”. And
Describe the three ways earth material is carried down the Kenai River
Unit 7: Volcanoes(10 pts)
11. Describe three types of volcanoes (how they are formed and what they are composed of) and
give an example of each.
12. Discuss why Mount Redoubt is located where it is according to plate tectonics and
describe two other plate boundaries.
Unit 8: Earthquakes(10 pts)
13. Describe what is an earthquake. Include in your discussion the two terms used to describe the location of an earthquake, the types of seismic waves, and how we measure the strength and destruction of an earthquake.
